Bees Fall In Shootout To Laredo Bucks

LAREDO, Texas- The Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees (21-27-6) fell in the sixth round of their shootout against the Laredo Bucks (18-27-7) to fall by a final score of 4-3. Tyler Lehrke, Tomas Klempa and Bo Cheesman all scored for the Bees while Jerad Kaufmann made 29 saves on 32 shots.

The Killer Bees and Laredo Bucks opened the first period with end to end chances and each team creating multiple opportunities. Laredo forward Brian Matte snuck by the Killer Bees defense early in the first and while on the breakaway was hauled down by the Killer Bees defense and awarded a penalty shot.

Matte came in on the penalty shot and tried to roof the puck glove side but Jerad Kaufmann came out to challenge the shot and did not allow Matte enough space to raise the puck as Kaufmann made the save.

Laredo however would break the scoreless tie as Jeff Hazelwood scored an unassisted goal at 8:30. Hazelwood came in on two-on-zero and kept the puck himself going five hole against Kaufmann for the goal.

The Bucks would strike against just 2:26 later as Neil Trimm scored a shorthanded goal to give the Bucks the two goal edge. Trimm snuck behind the Killer Bees defense and took a feed from Justin Styffe and scored blocker side on Kaufmann.

Special teams were a major factor in the first period with the Bees going 0-4 and allowing a shorthanded goal.

In the second period the Bees would start their comeback getting one goal back at 3:24 of the second as Tyler Lehrke scored his eighth goal of the season. Brett Wilson earned the assist.

However just 17 seconds later the Laredo Bucks would strike on an end-to-end rush as Benjamin Dieude-Fauvel one-touched a Daniel Koger pass to the back of the net.

The Bees would continue their comeback as Tomas Klempa scored his 21st goal of the season cutting the Bucks lead to one goal again. Klempa took a Dan Gendur feed across the ice and ripped the shot past Torrie Jung. The goal was scored at 11:35 of the second.

The Bees would tie the game at the 4:40 mark of the third period as Bo Cheesman shot a loose puck past Torrie Jung. Aaron Lewicki picked up the assist for the Bees. For Cheesman it is his fifth goal as a Killer Bee, his 14th of the season overall.

The teams would remain tied throughout the rest of the third period and neither team was able to score in the overtime sending the game to a shootout, the Bees first since November 13. The Bees and Bucks would each score in the first round and wouldn't score for the next four rounds. In the sixth round Ryan Lehr scored the game winning goal with a wrist shot blocker side.

The Killer Bees and Laredo Bucks will face-off again Friday night at the State Farm Arena. The puck will drop at 7:30 p.m. and tickets are available by calling 843-PUCK (7825) or visiting killerbeehockey.com.
