February 25, 2011 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Allen Americans News Release
ALLEN, Texas- The Allen Americans defeated the Texas Brahmas tonight, 3-2 in front of a season-high crowd 4,626 at the Allen Event Center. Allen is now 7-1-0 against the Brahmas this season.
Returning home to Allen for the first time since February 13th, the Americans started the game with a solid effort, throwing shot after shot on Brahmas goaltender Wayne Savage. The Brahmas also had their fair share of chances in the first stanza, creating a free-wheeling game with action at both ends.
Savage ended up with 18 saves in the first, while Whitley came away with 9 saves at the other end of the ice.
Jarret Lukin opened the scoring in the second period at 16:19, giving the Americans a 1-0 lead. Tobias Whelan drove hard down the off-wing, stopped up at the half-wall and fired the puck to Lukin, who stopped right at the crease and put the puck past Savage.
Late in the period, the Brahmas piled up shots on a power play opportunity, before Greg Hogeboom finally put in a slap shot from the top of the circle on the right wing. The goal extended Hogeboom's point streak to 8 games, while Chad Woollard's assist on the play extended his own point streak to 10 games. The goal sent the game to the 3rd period with the score tied at 1.
The Americans grabbed the lead back early in the 3rd period when Bruce Graham tallied his 29th goal of the season, on the power play at 2:05. Colton Yellow Horn and Jonathan Zion assisted on the play. Yellow Horn's assist extended his point streak to 10 games.
Chris Brassard tied the game at 2 at 10:54, firing home a rebound opportunity after a Brian Ihnacak show careened off of the pad of Whitley and into the slot.
When the game looked like it was headed to overtime, Allen Captain Tobias Whelan out-competed the Brahma defenders, grabbed a loose puck and fired it through the legs of Savage to give the Americans a 3-2 lead. The Americans weathered a late Brahmas power play which lasted the final 1:55 to hang on for the win.
With the victory, Allen moves to 37-11-2 for the season, and widens its lead to 15 points over second place Texas. The Americans also moved 6 points ahead of Rapid City for the overall CHL points lead, even having played 5 less games.
Allen will now skate again at home Saturday night against the Bloomington Prairiethunder. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 PM for the first ever appearance in Allen by a former IHL club.
Prior to tomorrow night's game the Allen Police and Fire Departments will skate in the second annual Police vs Fire game at 5:00 PM. Doors will open at 4:15 for Police vs Fire contest, leading into the Americans vs Prairiethunder.
