Kansas City Mavericks News Release
INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - The second ever meeting between the Missouri Mavericks and Bloomington PrairieThunder took place Wednesday night at Independence Events Center. A 30-save performance by Gerry Festa and a shorthanded goal by Nick Sirota were not enough for the Mavericks as the PrairieThunder skated away with a 3-2 victory.
Determined to exorcise the demons that haunted them in Bossier-Shreveport in a 6-1 Tuesday night loss, the Mavericks jumped out to an early lead, as Carlyle Lewis scored his first goal of the year just 21 seconds into the game. Simon Watson and Derek Pallardy were credited with assists. The opening frame also featured the Mavericks' defensive prowess, as the Mavericks held Bloomington to just one shot on goal for the first ten minutes of play. The PrairieThunder ended up with just eight shots on goal in the first period compared to the Mavericks' 12.
The second period would hold completely different results from the first period for both teams. While the Mavs offense flourished in the first period, they struggled to mount any offensive pressure on Bloomington goaltender, Marco Emond, only recording five shots on net. The PrairieThunder's offense exploded in the middle frame. Bloomington piled up three goals on 17 shots over a seven minute span. Craig McDonald got the scoring started with a power play goal by Craig MacDonald at the 7:11 mark of the period. Assists went to Alan Mazur and John Snowden. The PrairieThunder struck again just three minutes later, when Brian Kaufman found the twine on a pass from Brett Holmberg. The Bloomington assault on the Mavericks' defensive corps continued as the PrairieThunder added another power play goal, this time from Jon Booras. John Snowden recorded his second point of the game with an assist on the goal. Kerry Toddington also was credited with an assist on Booras' tally. The period ended with the PrairieThunder outshooting the Mavericks 17-5 and in the lead 3-1.
The Mavericks would not be denied, however, in the third and final period. Nick Sirota powered his way towards the Bloomington net and flipped a shot on net that slid through Emond's pads for what appeared to be a shorthanded goal. The referee's whistle seemed to blow just as the puck crossed the line. The referee conferred with the goal judge and the officiating crew determined that Sirota's attempt was indeed a good goal. The shorthanded goal was the Mavericks' third so far this season. With just over 18 minutes left to play, the Mavericks would have to find a way to win. The Mavericks struggled to find any offensive rhythm after the Sirota shorthanded mark and were only able to muster eight shots on net for the remainder of the game. Missouri pulled Festa with just under a minute left, but the benefit of the extra attacker would not be enough for Missouri, as Bloomington went on to win, 3-2.
Emond finished the night with 23 saves on 25 Missouri shots. Festa was peppered with shots for most of the game, ending up with 30 saves on 33 shots. The Mavericks power play failed to yield any results as they went zero for four with man-advantages. Bloomington however won the special teams aspect of the game, as they went two for six on the power play.
The Mavericks wrap up their four games in five night stretch this weekend with a two-game Friday-Saturday set with the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees. Both games start at 7:05pm at Independence Events Center. Tickets for all remaining regular season home games are on sale now starting at just $14 per game.
