Kansas City Mavericks News Release

PRESCOTT VALLEY, Arizona - The Missouri Mavericks tied a franchise record with their fifth straight win and improved to 5-0-0 in a 4-2 win over the Arizona Sundogs on Saturday night at Tim's Toyota Center. The Mavericks jumped out to a 3-0 lead before the Sundogs cut the lead to one-goal in the third period. John-Scott Dickson had two goals for the Mavericks including the empty net goal which ensured the Mavs' fifth straight win. Sebastien Thinel also had three assists for Missouri who will head home before a weekend series against the Wichita Thunder. The teams will battle in Wichita on Friday, November 4 and the Mavericks home opener is set for Saturday, November 5 at Independence Events Center.

"It was a gutsy performance tonight," said Mavericks' Head Coach Scott Hillman. "Vern Cooper came up huge with our first goal, (Sebastien) Thinel showed his incredible leadership with three assists and Charlie Effinger stood on his head once again. We are coming home with 10 points on the trip which exceeds our expectations."

Missouri took a 2-0 lead in the first period and outshot the Sundogs 21-11 through the first 20 minutes. First it was Vern Cooper who scored his first professional goal at the 8:02 mark on assists from Thinel and Cole Ruwe. Just over eight minutes later, Dickson netted his first of the game on a power play goal to give Missouri a 2-0 lead. Dale Mahovsky and Dave Pszenyczny earned the assists and Mahovsky extended his point streak to five games.

Brandon Coccimiglio made it 3-0 early into the second period on his third goal of the season. Thinel earned his second assist on the play and Andrew Courtney had his first assist on the season. The Mavericks had a five-on-three opportunity halfway through the second period, but Arizona killed both penalties to keep it a 3-0 game. Arizona outshot the Mavericks 15-9 in the period, but the Sundogs were still unable to get a puck past Mavs' goaltender Charlie Effinger.

Sundogs' forward Craig MacDonald ended the Mavericks' shutout bid with a power play goal at the 5:27 mark of the third period. Then Luke Erickson made it a one-goal game with 8:45 remaining. Tyler Butler assisted on each of the Sundogs goals, but it proved to be as close as they would get. Dickson scored his second goal of the game on an empty netter with 20 seconds remaining and sealed the Mavericks' victory.

The Mavericks will try to make it six for six on their season-long road trip when they travel to Wichita to take on the Thunder on Friday, November 4. The Mavericks home opener is Saturday, November 5 against the Thunder. Missouri plays home games at the state-of-the-art Independence Events Center where parking is always free.
