Mallards Complete Sweep
October 29, 2011 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Quad City Mallards News Release
BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Brandon Marino- who also picked up an assist- and Eric Giosa scored two goals apiece and Brad Fogal made 36 saves in his professional debut as the Quad City Mallards defeated the host Bloomington Blaze 6-2 Saturday night to complete a two-game weekend sweep of the Blaze.
The Mallards jumped out to a 3-0 first period lead and never looked back. Giosa got Quad City off to the best possible start by tipping in the opening goal 53 seconds into the contest. Just 23 seconds later the Mallard lead doubled when Marino shoveled home a rebound. Giosa would stretch the Quad City lead to three with a long range blast at 15:42 of the first.
After a scoreless second period, Mickey Lang widened the gap to 4-0 by scoring his first career goal on a breakaway at 6:39 of the third period. The Blaze finally solved Fogal for the first time when Kyle Laughlin buried the puck from close range to make it 4-1 at 10:10 of the third. At 13:34 the Mallards were on the power play when Marino, from a tight angle, scored his second and the Flock's fifth. The Blaze responded with a power play goal of their own from Travis Granbois, who pounced on the puck on the doorstep at 15:12. In the final minute another power play goal would cap off the win for the Mallards. Justin Chwedoruk provided the final flourish from the slot with just 19 seconds left in the game.
Fogal missed out on the Mallards' dramatic 6-5 overtime victory in Bloomington Friday night after being called up to the American Hockey League's Rockford IceHogs yesterday and serving as the back up in the IceHogs' 6-4 win over the Rivermen in Peoria Friday evening, but he was back in plenty of time to make his vital contribution to the Flock's four-point weekend tonight.
The Mallards next play at home next Friday night at 7:05 p.m. against the Dayton Gems. Next Friday will be Veterans Appreciation Night as the Mallards honor those who have served in the armed forces in what will be the Flock's final home game before Veterans Day. Tickets for Veterans Appreciation Night are available to veterans for the special discounted rate of just $5 at the i wireless Center box office. Family and friends of veterans can purchase their seats for next Friday night's game at special discounted group rates.
Next Friday evening will also see the Mallards hold their annual teddy bear toss. Fans who bring a new, unwrapped stuffed animal to the November 4 game can toss it onto the ice after the Mallards' first goal in that tilt. Those teddy bears will then be donated to the Quad City Festival of Trees and used to assemble the "Zoo Tree." Festival of Trees will, in turn, donate the teddy bears to children in need. The first 1,000 fans through the doors who bring stuffed animals to the game will receive free Mallards teddy bears in exchange.
Single game tickets for all of the Mallards' regular season contests- including next Friday's game- are now available. Fans can contact the Mallards at (309) 277-1364 or tickets@myqcmallards.com for more information about both season and single game tickets.
Single game tickets are also available at the i wireless Center box office, at Ticketmaster outlets, through www.ticketmaster.com or through Ticketmaster charge-by-phone toll free. The box office is open weekdays from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and on game days from 10:00 a.m. until the start of the second period.
