February 3, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Kansas City Mavericks News Release
TULSA, OK - The Missouri Mavericks skated away with 1 point from their Wednesday night contest against the Tulsa Oilers at the BOK Center in Tulsa, OK after falling in overtime to their Central Division rival, 4-3. The Mavericks remain atop the ECHL standings with 71 points and an overall record of 34-5-2-1.
The Mavericks jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but then allowed 3 unanswered goals by the Oilers who tied the game with 5 seconds remaining in regulation to force an overtime decision. Tulsa's Connor Kucera scored the game-winning OT goal just 47 seconds into the extra frame.
Tanner Fritz scored the lone goal of the opening period with a quick wrister at 6:12. Team Captain, Trevor Ludwig, was credited with the only assist on the play.
The Mavericks took a strong stand at the start of the second period, bumping up their lead to 3-0 over the Oilers before five minutes had elapsed. Josh Holmstrom notched his eleventh goal of the season at 3:04 with the help of Sebastien Sylvestre and Chris Owens. Then Matt Finn was credited with a goal that knocked off his skate and past Tulsa net-minder Kevin Carr just 1:32 after Holmstrom's lamp-lighter for the 3-0 advantage. Tyler Barnes and Jesse Graham took the helpers on Finn's third goal wearing a Mavericks sweater.
The Oilers made their move at 6:04 when Nathan Lutz bested Stephon Williams with a blast from the point, assisted by Jimmy Lodge and Dennis Brown. Brown then made his own mark on the scoresheet at 14:26 to pull the Oilers within 1 goal of the Mavs, 3-2. (Assists credited to Matt Konan and Jimmy Lodge).
Missouri maintained their slight edge through the remainder of regulation and fought through a flurry of near-miss opportunities by Tulsa through the final minutes of play with net-minder Kevin Carr pulled for an extra attacker. Then Adam Pleskach, aided by Lodge and Brown, scored with only 5 seconds on the clock to tie the scoreboard up 3-3 and send the game to overtime.
Conner Kucera scored the game-winning goal just 47 seconds into the extra frame for an Oilers 4-3 victory, marking only the Mavericks second overtime loss of the season.
