Kansas City Mavericks News Release

RAPID CITY, South Dakota - The Rapid City Rush completed a weekend sweep over the Missouri Mavericks Saturday night with a 5-2 win at Rushmore Plaza Civic Center Arena. In a penalty filled affair, the Rush scored four power play goals to propel them to a 2-0-0 record. Missouri (0-2-0) has seven games remaining in their nine-game road trip to start the season, and will play their next game Friday, October 23 at Colorado.

Brendon Hodge scored two power play goals for the Rush who finished 4-15 on the power play for the game. Scott Wray, Jamie VanderVeeken and Colt King also scored for the Rush who will host the Arizona Sundogs for a pair of games next weekend.

Karey Pieper scored his first pro goal and Sam Perkins tallied the other goal for Missouri. Mavericks' goaltender Doug Groenestege made 40 saves on 45 shots in his debut with the team. Two other Mavericks' celebrated career milestones as Jeff Christian played in his 1,200th pro game and Chad Hinz had his 400th pro point with an assist in the first period. For the second straight game, Bill Vandermeer (illness) and Kyle Bochek (injury) did not play.

"The guys were tired today from starting the season with two players not on the ice," said Head Coach Scott Hillman. "We were shorthanded off the bat (with players out of the lineup), not conditioned well enough at the start of the season, and found ourselves on the penalty kill a lot tonight. On a positive note we again had a lot of scoring chances, but we're just not quite clicking yet."

Colt King opened the scoring at the 7:20 mark of the opening period on Rapid City's first of four power play goals. The lead didn't last long as Karey Pieper notched his first professional goal at the 11:58 mark on assists from Jeff Christian and Chad Hinz. The assist for Hinz marked his 400th pro point. Scott Wray gave the rush a 2-1 lead with 2:12 remaining in the first to give the Rush a lead they wouldn't relinquish for the rest of the game.

Brendon Hodge made it 3-1 on a five-on-three goal in the second period, but again the Mavericks bounced back when Sam Perkins scored his first goal of the season. Perkins goal was an unassisted power play goal on a blast from the top of the right circle, but that was the closest the Mavericks would get.

In the third period, Jamie VanderVeeken and Hodge each tallied power play goals to make it a 5-2 final score.

Rapid City outshot the Mavericks 45-23 in the game and had 15 power plays to the Mavericks 11. Miguel Beaudry won his second consecutive game in net for the Rush by stopping 21 of 23 shots.

Single-game tickets are now on sale for all 32 of the Mavericks' home games. Season tickets, group tickets and mini-plans are available by calling the Mavericks front office at (816) 252-7825. For more information, please visit www.MissouriMavericks.com.
