Amarillo Gorillas News Release
Amarillo, TX - In the Gorillas home opener, Amarillo didn't shy away from a potent Odessa Jackalopes squad, defeating last year's Southwest division champions 2-1.
Scoring was light in the first period, but Gorillas forward Joe Guenther was able to take a turnover in the Odessa zone and fire the puck in the top of the net past Odessa's goaltender Joel Martin at the 12:54 mark. 1-0 Amarillo after the first period.
The second period Gorillas penalty kill shined the brightest, as the unit halted the Jackalopes on all 5 chances. End of the second Gorillas 1 Odessa 0.
In the beginning of the final frame, Odessa's Kenny Bernard through a puck from the near wall in the Gorillas zone into traffic where Dominic Leveille punched the puck past Gorillas netminder Mike Brown. Tied at one at the 11:58 mark, Gorillas forward Jake Morissette was taken to the ice while on a breakaway and had a chance to give the Gorillas the lead on a penalty shot. Odessa's goaltender Joel Martin stopped the opportunity and the game remained tied. With less than 5 minutes remaining in the game, defenseman Andrew Smale sent a crisp pass to Joe Guenther who charged into the Odessa zone to score a backhand goal for his second of the game and the game winner.
Gorillas goaltender Mike Brown made 42 of 43 saves, earning the first star of the game.
