Even Season, RiverKings Win in Wichita
October 17, 2009 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Mississippi RiverKings News Release
(Wichita, KS) --- Ryan Held's two third-period goals provided the difference for the RiverKings in a 5-3 victory at Wichita Saturday, October 17th. The win evened the season record at 1-1-0 for the RiverKings.
Just like in last night's loss to Tulsa, the RiverKings took a 2-0 lead on a goal from Bobby Chaumont at 2:48 and another from Kevin Jarman at 7:32. Jarman's tally was his second in as many games to open the season.
However, Wichita scored a pair of power play goals to tie the contest at the first intermission. Marc Belanger scored at 10:33 and Jason Duda scored at 15:02 for a 2-2 tie at the first intermission.
Wichita took a 3-2 lead in the second period on their third power play goal of the night, scored by Glenn Detulleo at 10:13, a goal scored with Wichita holding a two-man advantage.
But the RiverKings answered for the first time on the power play late in the middle session, when Ryan Campbell notched his first goal of the year with 44 seconds left in the period, a goal that also came with the visiting team holding a two-man advantage.
Held became the difference-maker in the final period. He scored the game-winner at 38 seconds into the final period (the eventual game-winner), then his shorthanded, unassisted goal at 15:49 finished up the scoring.
The RiverKings out shot the Thunder 30-27 for the game, as goaltender Ray Jean won his first game of the season with a 24-save performance. Scott Campbell took the loss for Wichita with 25-save effort.
Mississippi ended the night 1-for-8 on the power play with a shorthanded goal, while the Thunder scored three power play goals in ten tries.
Of note from Saturday's contest, captain Derek Landmesser played in his 500th game as a RiverKing, earning one assist. Landmesser went past the 800 mark in career professional games late last season.
The RiverKings complete the first of two consecutive three-game weekends tomorrow afternoon (Sunday) when they take on the Gorillas in Amarillo, Texas. Game time will be 4:05 PM (Central).
The next RiverKings home game in Southaven will come Friday, October 23rd, when they challenge the defending CHL champion Texas Brahmas in the first of a home-and-home series. Game time at "The Ice Palace in Southaven" off the I-55 Church Road exit will be at 7:05 PM. For ticket information, call the RiverKings at 662-342-1755 or go online to www.riverkings.com.
