Kansas City Mavericks News Release
INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - One night after clinching a playoff berth, the Missouri Mavericks defeated the Quad City Mallards, 5-1, Saturday night at i wireless Center. Goaltender Robby Nolan stopped 35 of 36 shots for his 22nd win of the season, and the Mavericks' power play unit scored a pair of goals. Missouri improved to 31-18-6 on the season and has earned at least a point for the eighth straight road game.
"We played much better than we did yesterday," said Mavericks' Head Coach Scott Hillman. "They came at us with a lot of energy tonight, but we played our most sound first 40 minutes of the season. Our power play also looked great against one of the best penalty kill units in the league."
The Mavericks scored a pair of goals in the first period and never looked back. Defenseman Steven Later scored a power play goal at the 10:46 mark on assists from Shawn Fensel and Nathan O'Nabigon. Then, the hottest duo on the team hooked up to make it a 2-0 game when Mike Berry fed Todd Griffith for a goal. Missouri outshot the Mallards 12-10 in the period and took the two-goal lead into the intermission.
Early in the second period, Joe Blaznek scored a power play goal for the Mallards to cut the Mavericks' lead in half, but the Mavericks again answered right back. Fensel scored his second goal of the season on a power play to regain the two-goal advantage. He was assisted by Later and Berry, and all three players had their second point on the goal.
Late in the second period, Brandon Coccimiglio scored his first professional goal when get got behind the Mallards' defense and made a nice move to beat Mallards' goaltender David Brown. Coccimiglio's goal gave Missouri a 4-1 lead heading into the final period.
Toby Lafrance scored the lone goal of the third period on a nice pass from Ryan Jardine to give the Mavericks a 5-1 win. Missouri finished 2-for-5 on the power play and killed all but one of the Mallards' five chances. The game marked the seventh and final game between the two teams this season, and the Mavericks finished 5-2-0 against the Mallards.
