Brahmas Clinch Playoff Position In 5-4 Shootout Win
March 5, 2011 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Fort Worth Brahmas News Release
NORTH RICHLAND HILLS, Texas - With the regular season winding down and teams pushing for a solid playoff position, tight games are inevitable; and so it was between Laredo and Texas as the Brahmas squeaked by the Bucks 5-4 in a shootout.
Chad Woollard hit milestone point 700 early in the game when he netted his league leading 38th goal of the season for a Texas lead. Laredo scored three back to back goals in the period beginning with a goal from Justin Styffe. Keegan Dansereau followed up when he went top shelf on Texas netminder Wayne Savage at the 15:04 mark. It was the Bucks "unlucky" shot 13 less than one minute later from B.J. Crum that handed Laredo the 3-1 lead heading into the first intermission.
A goaltending change to begin the second took place for the Brahmas as Scott Reid took the reins between the pipes in relief for Savage. What seemed to be an uneventful period completely changed due to the physicality between Texas enforcer Nathan Saunders and Buck forward Justin Styffe who dropped the gloves behind Reid's net. With just a single second remaining in the middle frame a shot by Jason Deitsch was redirected by Mick Lawrence past Pier Pelletier for the Brahmas second goal of the evening.
Lawrence tied the game in the final period for his second of the night, only to have the celebration disrupted twelve seconds later when Brian Matte netted his ninth goal of the season for a Laredo 4-3 lead. With the game on the line Woollard displayed his veteran leadership with his scoring touch, and the help of a Texas extra attacker, when he sent the game into overtime with five seconds remaining in regulation. To claim the victor of the contest, the game was sent to the shootout where Brian Ihnacak sent the game winner past Pelletier to buckle down Texas' fourth consecutive postseason berth.
The Brahmas are off to visit the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs on the road tomorrow afternoon for a 4:05 pm faceoff. Texas returns home for some Tuesday action hockey at NYTEX when the Bloomington Prairie Thunder visit for a 7 pm game.
