Mavericks Silence Thunder 5-2 Missouri Captures Big Win Over Central Division Rival
March 28, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL)
Kansas City Mavericks News Release
INDEPENDENCE, MO - The Missouri Mavericks held a close contest with the visiting Wichita Thunder until the final two minutes of regulation when forward Lindsay Sparks made his mark on the score sheet with back-to-back empty-net goals, pushing Missouri ahead 5-2 over their Central Division rivals before the final horn.
Missouri opened the scoreboard early with a lamp-lighter from leading goal-scorer, Andrew Courtney, at 4:59 of the first period. Lindsay Sparks and defenseman Matt Stephenson were credited with the assists on Courtney's thirty-second goal of the season.
Courtney is only two goals away from tying his own franchise record for single-season goals, set during the Mavs 2013-14 campaign at thirty-four goals.
Wichita came back to tie the game only fifty-eight seconds into the second period when Justin Bernhardt bested Mavericks net minder Josh Robinson in the crease. Danick Gauthier was credited with the lone assist. Todd Hosmer stole the lead for Wichita with another Thunder goal at 3:09, assisted by Nikita Kashirsky.
Missouri answered back Wichita's offensive move with two power-play goals in the second frame. Tyler Currier tallied his fifth goal of the season on a Mavericks man-advantage at 5:36 with the help of Ludwig Karlsson and defenseman Patch Alber to tie the game 2-2. Karlsson netted a power-play goal of his own at 16:18, aided by Sebastien Thinel and defenseman Chris Owens for a 3-2 Mavericks lead heading into the third period.
The Mavs held onto their 3-2 advantage through to the final minutes of regulation, when the Thunder pulled net minder Grant Rollheiser in favor of a sixth skater, and Lindsay Sparks bumped the Missouri lead up 5-2 with back-to-back empty-net goals. Thinel and Owens took the helpers on Sparks' first tally, and Courtney completed the pass from Thinel for Sparks' twenty-first goal of the season.
