Kansas City Mavericks News Release
EVANSVILLE, Indiana - The Missouri Mavericks fell to the Evansville IceMen in overtime, 2-1, Friday night at Ford Center. Matt Gens game-winning goal came with just 36 seconds remaining in the overtime period as the IceMen improved to 7-1-1. Missouri (7-2-2) earned a point in the overtime loss and remains in first place in the Turner Conference just one point ahead of the IceMen. Mavericks' goaltender Gerry Festa stopped 19 of 21 shots in the overtime loss and his counterpart Bryan Gillis stopped 36 of the Mavericks' 37 shots in the win. The teams will battle again Saturday night at Independence Events Center at 7:05 p.m. Tickets are still available by calling (800) 745-3000 or visiting www.Ticketmaster.com.
"That was the best game we've played in probably our last four games," said Mavericks' Head Coach Scott Hillman. "We did a great job on the penalty kill against the league's best power play, but we needed a power play goal ourselves. We made two huge mistakes and it cost us two goals. It's very disappointing to lose that late but coming up with one point is big."
The teams skated to a scoreless first period. The Mavericks were 0-for-1 on the power play in the period, but Missouri killed two power plays against the Central Hockey League's (CHL) best power play unit.
Josh Beaulieu unlocked the scoreless tie late in the second period when he redirected a centering pass from Todd Robinson and the puck got past Festa. The goal came at the 15:53 mark of the second period and Sean O'Connor earned the second assist on the play. Through two periods, the IceMen had the lead, but it was the Mavericks who had the lead in shots at 18-13.
Missouri continued to put pucks on net, and finally John-Scott Dickson tied the game when he roofed his shot over the shoulder of Gillis to tie the game 1-1. Dickson's goal came at the 4:33 mark on assists from Dale Mahovsky and Andy Zulyniak, but it proved to be the only puck to get past Gillis all night. Missouri outshot Evansville 16-7 in the final period and 3-1 in the overtime period, but the one shot in overtime for Evansville was the difference maker. Gens buried a loose puck from just in front of the crease to give the IceMen their seventh win of the season.
The Mavericks finished 0-for-3 on the power play, and killed all four of Evansville's power plays. Missouri is now 6-1-1 on the road and 1-1-1 at home.
Missouri returns to Independence tomorrow to take on the IceMen again. The puck drops at 7:05 p.m. at the state-of-the-art Independence Events Center where parking is always free. Tickets are still available via Ticketmaster. Call (816) 252-7825 for more information or visit www.MissouriMavericks.com .
