Sundogs Stunt Brahmas Streak at Five
November 18, 2011 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Fort Worth Brahmas News Release
PRESCOTT VALLEY, Arizona - The Brahmas' third period surge wasn't quite enough, as the Sundogs hold on to win 3-2 Friday night.
The Sundogs came out strong early, getting ahead 3-0 in the first period. Jean-Pierre Chabot scored two goals in the frame, and Luke Erickson scored the other. Erickson scored the only goal for Arizona in Thursday night's matchup.
Goaltending has been a strong point for the Brahmas thus far in 2011-12, as they were second best in the CHL in goals allowed with only 24 entering Friday night's matchup with the Sundogs. But Texas netminder Steve Silverthorn struggled in the first period, stopping only 8 of the 11 shots he faced before being temporarily pulled for Mark Guggenberger. Silverthorn settled down though, as he saved all 13 shots he faced in the final two periods.
The Brahmas finally were able to put the puck past Arizona netminder Scott Reid at the 1:53 mark in the third period as Kyle Howarth scored his second goal in as many nights. With just under five minutes remaining, Calin Wild brought the Brahmas within one as he scored his third goal of the season. But for the Brahmas, it was simply too little, too late.
The Brahmas' struggles on the powerplay this season continued as they failed to convert on three opportunities Friday night. The Sundogs scored twice on five powerplays, making the difference in the contest.
Texas had won five straight games, but the early three-goal deficit proved to be too much to overcome.
The Brahmas and Sundogs meet again on Saturday night at 8:05pm for the rubber match of this three-game weekend series in Prescott Valley.
