Rush Net Three Shorthanded Goals, but Fall Short in Allen

(Allen, TX) - The Rapid City Rush squared off against the Allen Americans in a rematch of the 2010 CHL Presidents' Cup Finals on Friday night. In a contest that saw each team hold the lead on two different occasions, the Americans ended up on top 5-4 at the end of 60 minutes. The Rush collected three shorthanded goals, including the first penalty shot of the season, but Jarret Lukin's hat trick proved to be too much.
The Americans netted the only goal of the opening frame, getting precise passing along the perimeter that eventually led to captain Jarret Lukin redirecting home his first of the game. With an assist on the play, Jason Deitsch extended hit point streak to thirteen games for the Americans.
Both offenses were on display during the second period as the two teams combined for five goals, beginning with a pair of shorthanded goals for the Rush. Both were set up by defenseman Michael Couch who backhanded a pass to Les Reaney on a 2-on-1, and the alternate captain slid a shot five-hole for the equalizer. Just 23 seconds later, the Rush took their first lead of the game when Couch's stretch pass led Shawn Limpright on a breakaway, and the veteran rang a backhander off the crossbar and in. The Americans tied the contest at the 8:45 mark on Jarret Lukin's second of the game, a wrist shot from the high slot that beat Danny Battochio to the glove side. Only 42 seconds later, Jeff Kyrzakos gave the Rush a 3-2 lead on his shot from the right side of the net, lofting a shot to the top-right corner. Rapid City's final lead was short-lived as Mike Berube collected his first goal of the season, tying the game at three heading into the third.
The Americans kept the offensive pressure going, netting two straight goals in the opening 6:48. The first came at 2:54 from leading scorer Jason Deitsch who redirected a shot from Tyler Ludwig off of his skate and in. Jarret Lukin then completed the hat trick, accepting a Colton Yellow Horn pass and slamming in a shot from the top of the crease. At the 8:39 mark, Rush winger Jesse Schultz was hauled down while on a shorthanded breakaway, setting up the teams' first penalty shot of the season. The veteran converted on the chance with a shot over the glove of goaltender Marco Cousineau, pulling the Rush to within one, but the goal was not enough as the Americans prevailed 5-4.
