Kansas City Mavericks News Release
LOVELAND, Colo. - The Colorado Eagles defeated the Missouri Mavericks, 4-2, Wednesday night at Budweiser Events Center. A slow start by the Mavericks ultimately determined the outcome of the game, and the Mavericks comeback effort fell short in the third period. Eagles' forward Adam Chorneyko tallied a pair of first period goals and Jason Beatty had two assists in the win for Colorado. Mavericks' goaltender Robby Nolan was brilliant in net again for the Mavericks stopping 32 of 35 shots. The Mavericks fell to 21-17-2 and have won just one game in their last six outings.
"The effort in the first period was totally unacceptable," said Mavericks' Head Coach Scott Hillman. "We are a team that's desperate to win games and to have half the locker room not ready is unacceptable. It is desperation time and gut check time for every one of us."
Chorneyko had more goals than the Mavericks had shots in the first period as the Eagles took a 2-0 lead. His first goal came at 6:26 and he added his second goal at the 18:21 mark. Colorado outshot the Mavericks 17-1 in the first period marking the fewest shots in a period this season for Missouri.
The teams went scoreless in the second period and the Eagles again outshot Missouri 10-8.
Adam Hogg gave Colorado a 3-0 lead at the 8:26 mark of the third period, but the Mavericks didn't give in. Missouri scored two power play goals in the final minutes of regulation to cut the lead to 3-2. First, Carlyle Lewis scored at the 17:42 mark when he buried a rebound off a shot by Nick Sirota. The Mavericks then earned another power play and Bill Vandermeer scored when he also banged home a rebound while the Mavericks had an extra attacker. His goal came with just 58 seconds remaining in the game.
Immediately following the Vandermeer goal, the Mavericks earned a faceoff in the Colorado zone. Missouri was unable to keep the puck in the zone and Kevin Ulanski ended the game with an empty net goal with 30 seconds remaining.
The Mavericks killed all four of the Eagles power play chances, and Missouri finished 2-for-3 with the man advantage. Colorado outshot the Mavericks 36-17 in the game. The teams have now won two games each in the season series.
Missouri heads Mississippi on Tuesday, February 8 before three-straight games against the Eagles. The Mavericks will host the Eagles on Friday, February 11 before heading to Loveland for two more games at Budweiser Events Center.
