Mudbugs, Willis-Knighton Team up to "Power the Cure"
February 2, 2011 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release
BOSSIER CITY, LA - The Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs of the Central Hockey League are proud to once again team up with our partners at Willis-Knighton Health System this Friday at 7:05 pm for "Power the Cure Night" against the Evansville IceMen. "Power the Cure" is an effort to raise awareness about the preventable nature of head and neck cancer in conjunction with Willis-Knighton Sports Medicine and Cancer Center and the Jason Bland "Power the Cure" Foundation.
Head and neck cancer is directly attributed to tobacco products including smokeless tobacco, with 85% of head and neck cancers linked to tobacco use according to the National Cancer Institute (NCI). The NCI estimates that of the 55,000 Americans who will develop the disease this year, nearly one in every four will die from it.
Our special guest at Friday ¬â¢s game to help educate the public about the cause is Jennifer Bland, the widow of the late Jason Bland. Jason, who was a Certified Athletic Trainer at Willis-Knighton and Airline High School, used smokeless tobacco for nearly 20 years before passing away from head and neck cancer last year. Since then, Jennifer has helped launch the Jason Bland "Power the Cure" Foundation to raise awareness about the dangers of head and neck cancer.
To get involved and help support the cause, we ¬â¢re asking Mudbugs fans to wear purple to Friday night ¬â¢s game. The ¬ËBugs themselves will wear their purple alternate uniforms against the IceMen, and much of the night ¬â¢s activities will be directly themed around "Power the Cure".
As fans file out of the arena after the game, they will receive chewing gum with the message "Chew on This" to promote alternatives to tobacco use. The gum will be handed out courtesy of Willis-Knighton Sports Medicine and Cancer Center.
