Mallards' Giosa Named CHL Oakley Second Star for January
February 2, 2011 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Quad City Mallards News Release
MOLINE, Ill. (February 2, 2011) - The Quad City Mallards of the "AA" Central Hockey League today announced in conjunction with the CHL that Mallards center Eric Giosa has been named the league's Oakley Second Star for the month of January.
Giosa, 26, scored 11 goals and totaled 16 points while posting a plus/minus rating of +6 in January. The Northville, Michigan, native notched the first two hat tricks of his career last month. Giosa scored three goals in the Mallards' win at Evansville on January 8 and again in the Flock's victory last Friday night in Evansville.
Players are awarded five points each time they are named first star of a game, three points for second star recognition and one point for being tabbed third star. In January, Giosa was named first star three times, second star twice and third star once to total 22 points. He finished the month just behind Arizona's Luke Erickson (24 points), who was named January's first star. Former Mallard Chad Woollard- now a Texas Brahma- is the third star for the month.
The 5' 11", 182-pound Giosa leads the Mallards in goals (22) and plus/minus (+8) and is tied for the team lead in power play goals (6). Giosa has registered 34 points- one shy of the total he posted last season as rookie with the Laredo Bucks.
The Mallards acquired Giosa from the Wichita Thunder in September in the trade that sent Jason Goulet to Wichita. Giosa had moved from Laredo to the Thunder earlier in the offseason. Last season Giosa scored 12 goals and recorded 23 assists in 57 games with the Bucks. He played four games for the ECHL's Reading Royals at the end of the 2008-09 campaign after completing a four-year college career at Sacred Heart.
As a senior in 2008-09, Giosa led Sacred Heart with 16 goals and collected 29 points. In 140 career games as a Pioneer, he produced 42 goals and 84 points. Giosa played two junior seasons with the North American Hockey League's Toledo IceDiggers before arriving at Sacred Heart.
The Mallards are next in action Friday night at 7:05 on home ice against the Bloomington PrairieThunder. The first 1,000 fans ages 18 and over through the doors for Friday's game will receive free Mallards black adult replica jersey courtesy of Q106.5 and WQAD News 8.
Tickets for Friday night's game- and all Mallards regular season home games- are available in person at the i wireless Center box office, at Ticketmaster outlets, through www.ticketmaster.com or through Ticketmaster charge-by-phone toll free at 1-800-745-3000.
