Kansas City Mavericks News Release
MOLINE, Illinois - The Missouri Mavericks ended their four-game winless streak Sunday with a 2-1 shootout win over the Quad City Mallards at i wireless Center. Ryan Jardine scored the lone goal for the Mavericks in regulation and goaltender Robby Nolan stopped 33 of 34 shots including four of five in the shootout. Nolan earned his 15th win of the season, and the Mavericks improved to 21-15-4.
"This was a gutsy effort by our guys playing three games in three nights and Quad City had last night off," said Mavericks' Head Coach Scott Hillman. "Robby Nolan was outstanding and our penalty kill was outstanding. It was a big team effort."
Neither team was able to light the lamp in the first two periods. After a fairly calm first period in which each team killed just one penalty, Quad City earned the majority of the chances in the second period. The Mallards outshot the Mavericks 18-6 in the second period, due in large part to having four power play opportunities compared to just one for the Mavericks.
Jardine unlocked the scoreless tie just 1:15 into the third period when he tipped a shot by Ray DiLauro and beat Mallards' goaltender David Brown. The goal proved to be the only goal to get past Brown as he stopped 24 of 25 shots in regulation and overtime. Eric Giosa tied the game for the Mallards during the only power play opportunity in the third period at the 12:02 mark. His power play goal was assisted by Brandon Marino and Joe Blaznek, and the teams remained tied through the end of regulation.
Both teams had one-minute power play opportunities in the overtime period, but neither goaltender allowed a goal to force the game into a shootout.
Mike Berry and Nick Sirota scored for the Mavericks in the shootout and Robby Nolan stopped four of five shots to give the Mavericks their first win in their last five games. Missouri improved to 21-15-4 this season and 4-7-1 for the month of January.
