Dayton Gems News Release

Heading into Sunday, the Dayton Gems had come up short on their comebacks during their previous two games. Sunday's game against Wichita made it three in a row.

After trailing 1-0 early in the game, Dayton was able to take a 3-2 lead with less than five minutes remaining in the game.

In the final four minutes of the game, the Thunder scored a pair of goals to hand the Gems a 4-3 loss.

The loss is the fourth straight for the Gems, their longest such streak of the season.

Both teams were slow to get started on Sunday afternoon. Neither Dayton nor Wichita recorded a goal in the opening period. The Thunder were able to break the scoreless spell at the 5:20 mark when Aaron Davis scored a powerplay goal to Wichita a 1-0 advantage.

Dayton's Jonathan Ornelas was able to knot the game up at 1-1 later in the period. Kyle Bochek and Nick Canzanello were each credited with an assist on the play. The goal was Ornelas' 14th of the season and third in two games.

Just 22 seconds into the third period, Wichita's Matt Robinson broke the tie with a powerplay goal to give the Thunder a 2-1 advantage.

The lead was short lived as Matt McCue was able to score for the Gems and tie the game at 2-2. The goal was just the second of the season for the defenseman. Mike Vaskivuo and Canzanello were each credited with an assist on the play.

Dayton took its first lead of the game late in the third period when Vaskivuo scored his 18th of the season. The 3-2 advantage was Dayton's only lead of the day, and it was short lived.

Within 90 seconds, Wichita scored two goals and went on to win by a score of 4-3.

The Gems will have a short break before taking on Bloomington on Wednesday, February 2. The game at Hara Arena will start at 7 p.m.

The Kettering Medical Center is proud to be the official title sponsor of the Gems for the 2010-11 season.
