Fort Wayne Hangs on to Top Mudbugs

January 30, 2011 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release

BOSSIER CITY, LA - Jamie Milam scored the apparent game-tying goal with 3:01 remaining in the third period Saturday night at the CenturyTel Center, but the puck traveled through the back of the net and a goal was never signaled as the Fort Wayne Komets held on for a 2-1 victory over the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs. The Mudbugs now stand at 22-19-2 heading into next week's back-to-back set with the Evansville IceMen.

Video replay showed conclusively after the game that Milam's blast from the point traveled into the top corner of the net, dislodging Kevin Reiter's water bottle before hitting the end boards. Unfortunately for the ‘Bugs, video replay is not reviewable for CHL officials and the goal light was not turned on as play continued after the shot.

David Rutherford scored Bossier-Shreveport's only goal as Fort Wayne completed a sweep of this weekend's two-game set in Bossier City. The ‘Bugs outshot the Komets 30-22 on the night, but the visitors scored the go-ahead goal in the first minute of the final period to get their 15th win of the year.

The Mudbugs outshot the Komets 13-8 in the first, but each team missed on a powerplay and the game stayed scoreless into the second. The opening frame wasn't without its fireworks however, as James DeLory put on a good show for the fans in a fight against Dustin Molle.

Fort Wayne opened the scoring in the second on a goal by Molle, who sent a long wrist shot through traffic and into the net to put the Komets ahead 1-0. The ‘Bugs answered on the powerplay less than a minute later as Rutherford stuffed in his league-leading 27th goal of the year on a wraparound to knot the game at one heading into the third period.

Tab Lardner buried a centering feed from Derek Patrosso just 22 seconds into the final stanza to put Fort Wayne back on top at 2-1. Michael Couch nearly scored on a shot from center ice midway through the third, but the Mudbugs were ruled to be offside on the play and the goal was waved off. Milam's no-goal then came right off a faceoff win during a late powerplay, and the ‘Bugs fell short of getting the equalizer in a 2-1 loss.

John DeCaro (11-8-1) stopped 20 shots in the loss, while Kevin Reiter (5-8-1) finished with 29 saves. Bossier-Shreveport went 1 for 6 on the powerplay and held Fort Wayne scoreless on four chances.

The Mudbugs will now have four days off before starting a back-to-back set against the Evansville IceMen next Thursday and Friday at the CTC to complete a six-game homestand.

Mini-plans and group ticket packages for all home games are available now through the Mudbugs office at 752-BUGS. Individual tickets are on sale through Ticketmaster at 318-741-9700, online at www.ticketmaster.com or at the CenturyTel Center main box office.
