PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. - The Colorado Eagles battled back from a two-goal deficit and three separate one-goal deficits en route to a 6-4 win over the Arizona Sundogs Saturday night at Tim's Toyota Center.
Arizona held a 3-1 lead in the second period and didn't trail until the game's final four minutes when Colorado's Riley Nelson tallied the eventual game-winner with both teams skating 4-on-4. Doug Groenestege made the initial stop on an Aaron Schneekloth shot from between the circles but Nelson collapsed on the loose puck at the near post for the tap in.
Nelson also assisted on Daymen Rycroft's empty net marker with 40 seconds remaining in the contest to pick up his second point of the night.
Joey Sides staked his club to an early 1-0 lead with his fourth goal in as many games two minutes into the contest, shelving a shot just beneath the crossbar and over the shoulder of Kyle Jones from the right side of the cage.
Kevin Ulanksi evened the score at one midway through the opening frame, slipping an innocent centering attempt along the ice and beneath Groenestege from the near dot. Looking for a redirect attempt, Ulanski's pass found its way through traffic and past the Arizona goaltender.
Karl Sellan's fourth of the year 5:14 into the second period reclaimed a one goal cushion for the Sundogs before Kyle Hood converted on a penalty shot just over two minutes later to extend Arizona's lead to 3-1.
Pulled to the ice on a shorthanded breakaway attempt, Hood skated in alone on Jones, faking forehand before lifting a backhand effort past the Eagles netminder for his ninth of the season.
Adam Chorneyko collected his third point in two games against the Sundogs at the 11:03 mark, capitalizing on an errant pass by an Arizona player in the neutral zone before Schneekloth tied the game at three with 3:42 remaining in the middle frame, netting his team's eighth shorthanded marker of the season after the Eagles rushed up the ice 3-on-1.
Rookie defenseman Billy Bezeau extended his point streak to six games with his fifth goal of the season just over a minute later, finding the back of the net four seconds after a Sundogs power play came to an end. Collecting a Sides pass from the point, Hood slipped a pass through the slot to Bezeau pinching from his position at the blue line for a 4-3 lead after 40 minutes of play.
Hood finished with a goal and two assists in the loss.
Former Sundog Matt Hanson registered his first goal in an Eagles uniform 1:43 into the third period with a wrist shot from the top of the left circle that beat Groenestege inside the near post, pulling Colorado even for the third time in the contest.
The two teams close out a three-game set tomorrow afternoon at 4:05pm (Arizona time) at Tim's Toyota Center. Tickets start at just $12 and are available by phone at 1-866-4-GET-TIX (1-866-443-8849), online at www.GetTix.net and in person at the Tim's Toyota Center Box Office.
