Missouri Slips Past Mallards in Shootout

Quad City Mallards News Release

MOLINE, Ill. (January 30, 2011)- Rob Nolan made 33 saves in regulation and overtime and stopped four of five Quad City Mallard penalty shots as the Missouri Mavericks defeated the host Mallards 2-1 in a shootout Sunday.

Mike Berry and Nick Sirota scored in the shootout for the Mavericks while only Zac Pearson converted a penalty shot for the Mallards, who did earn one point for the shootout loss.

Overtime and- eventually- the shootout proved necessary after the two teams exchanged third period goals. Missouri's Ryan Jardine tipped in Ray DiLauro's shot to break a scoreless deadlock at 1:15 of the third. The Mallards were on the power play when Eric Giosa tipped home the equalizer at 12:02.

That the Mallards had not already taken the lead by the time the third period rolled around was due in good part to the efforts of Nolan, who stopped 18 Quad City shots in the second period alone.

Mallard center Joel Gasper on Sunday was granted leave by the Central Hockey League, while Quad City defenseman Shane Lovdahl was activated.

The Mallards return to action Tuesday night in Bloomington against the PrairieThunder. The Flock will then head home for a rematch with Bloomington Friday night at 7:05 p.m. The first 1,000 fans through the doors for Friday's game will receive free Mallards black adult replica jersey courtesy of Q106 and WQAD News 8.
