
Mateychuk, Yager Named to Canada's World Junior Team

Denton Mateychuk and Brayden Yager have cracked the squad.
The two Moose Jaw Warriors were among the 22 players named to Canada's National Junior Team on Wednesday and will take part in the 2024 IIHF World Junior Championship in Gothenburg, Sweden.
Jagger Firkus was one of the cuts made by Hockey Canada after wrapping up the selection camp in Oakville, ON on Wednesday.
Mateychuk and Yager will both be representing Canada for the first time at the tournament. It will be only the third time in Warriors' franchise history that the team has had multiple crack Canada's lineup and first time since 2002.
Eight players from the Western Hockey League were named to Team Canada.
Mateychuk heads into the tournament with six goals and 35 points in 24 games with the Warriors this season.
The Columbus Blue Jackets first round pick has previously won gold with Canada as a 16-year-old at the 2021 World Under-18 Hockey Championship.
Yager was selected by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the first round of the 2023 NHL Draft.
The Saskatoon product will be the only Saskatchewan born player on Canada's roster and heads in with 17 goals and 41 points in 28 games this season for the Warriors.
Yager worn the maple leaf with Canada at the 2022 Hlinka Gretzky Cup. He finished with five goals and nine points in five games as Canada won gold.
Team Canada will travel to Sweden on Thursday and begin preparations for the tournament, starting with pre-tournament games against Denmark on Dec. 19, Switzerland on Dec. 22 and the United States on Dec. 23.
The 2024 IIHF World Junior Championship opens on Boxing Day with Canada battling Finland at 7:30 a.m. CST.
