Wheat Kings Earn 6-3 Win
December 13, 2023 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Although they were missing their captain and one of their best scorers, the Brandon Wheat Kings offense didn't miss a beat as they hosted the Kelowna Rockets. Six different Wheat Kings scored in a 6-3 win.
Quinn Mantei and Jayden Wiens scored on the power play, Nolan Flamand and Luke Shipley scored shorthanded, and Tre Fouquette and Roger McQueen scored shorthanded as the Wheat Kings beat the Rockets. It's the sixth straight victory for Brandon, who got 16 saves from Carson Bjarnason.
"We had a pretty good first and I thought, though there were some glitches at times with our puck management, I thought it was a pretty good effort all around." said head coach and GM Marty Murray.
Mantei started the scoring on the power play, on which the Wheat Kings possessed the puck in the offensive zone the entire time. From the left point, Mantei snapped one through traffic and opened the scoring.
Later in the first, the Rockets answered as Tij Iginla stuffed home a wraparound. But early in the second, the Wheat Kings pulled ahead again. Pinching up, Fouquette walked in and picked the short side corner perfectly from the bottom of the right circle.
The goals came fast and furious from there. First, McQueen fired one home off the rush that leaked through the armpit of Jari Kykkanen. Then, almost immediately after, as McQueen's goal was being announced, Andrew Cristall tipped home a clever pass and made it 3-2.
The Wheat Kings restored their two-goal lead shorthanded, as Flamand read a pass perfectly, picked it off, and walked in alone, opening up the five-hole on Kykkanen to make it 4-2. The four goals in the second period came in a span of just 3:09.
The Rockets showed no quit, getting one back early in the third, but the Wheat Kings quickly snuffed out any sign of life from them. On the power play, Wiens waited patiently as he walked to the front of the net, then snapped one five-hole to make it 5-3.
Shipley provided the final nail in the coffin. Brett Hyland won a race to a loose puck shorthanded and fed Shipley out front, who made no mistake and potted his second goal in as many games.
With the win, the Wheat Kings move into third place in the Eastern Conference and improve to 5-and-0 on their homestand. Next up is Teddy Bear Toss night against the Moose Jaw Warriors on Saturday, December 16. It's the final game before the Christmas break.
