Tacoma Rainiers News Release
New Orleans, LA - Chris Mariscal and Connor Hoover combined for four solo home runs as the Tacoma Rainiers snapped their five-game losing streak against the New Orleans Baby Cakes on Sunday, 10-2.
Mariscal lifted his first solo blast in the top of the second off New Orleans (63-54) starter Robert Dugger. Back-to-back home runs by Mariscal and Hoover maintained Tacoma's lead in the top of the fifth, 9-0. In the top of the eighth, Hoover throttled his second bomb of the contest, putting the Rainiers ahead for good.
Tacoma (53-66) took an early two-run lead in the top of the first with an RBI single by catcher Joe Odom that scored Daniel Castro, followed by a sacrifice fly by Kelby Tomlinson to score Eric Filia.
The Rainiers had a five-run second that began with Mariscal's first solo blast. Filia scored Hoover on a sacrifice fly and Odom launched a three-run homer to score John Andreoli and Jaycob Brugman, advancing Tacoma, 7-0. Odom went 2-for-4 with a run and four RBI on Sunday.
Southpaw Sean Nolin (4-2) took the hill for the Rainiers and spun 6 2/3 innings of two run baseball, collecting four strikeouts and improving his ERA to 5.15.
Right-hander Darin Gillies took over with two outs in the bottom of the seventh and left an inherited runner stranded. The 26-year-old went 1 1/3 frames of one-run ball before Matt Festa took over in the ninth. The righty tossed a scoreless ninth to close out the contest.
The Rainiers will look for their second-straight against the Baby Cakes on Monday. Right-hander Nabil Crismatt (0-4, 8.91) will make the start for Tacoma and will face New Orleans right-hander Cody Poteet (1-1, 4.99) for a 4:30 p.m. PDT start. Mike Curto will have full coverage on South Sound Talk 850 with audio streaming available on the Tacoma Rainiers TuneIn Radio Network.
