Great Lakes Loons News Release
MIDLAND, Mich. - Facing Dayton Dragons starting pitcher Mac Sceroler, the Great Lakes Loons posted five runs in the first inning en route to a 7-6 victory on Tuesday at Dow Diamond.
Winners of seven straight games, the Loons (24-27) remain 0.5 game back of a Midwest League playoff spot due to Fort Wayne's win over West Michigan. Both the TinCaps and Whitecaps are 24-26, maintaining the two remaining postseason spots in the Eastern Division.
The most pivotal run in the first inning was a two-RBI single by Romer Cuadrado, which kept the momentum in Great Lakes' favor. Luke Heyer and Miguel Vargas continued with runs batted in of their own for a 5-0 early edge.
Just when it seemed like the Loons had enough to coast, the Dragons (20-31) responded in the top of the second. Hendrik Clementina launched his 17th homer of the season and Raul Wallace hit his fourth of the 2018 campaign, cutting Dayton's deficit to one run, 5-4.
In the bottom of the fourth, Drew Avans doubled down the line in left field to send Deacon Liput and Josh McLain home, giving the Loons room to work with. Once again, the Dragons responded. Off starting pitcher Alfredo Tavarez, Jose Garcia hit a solo shot to bring his team within two in the fifth inning.
Tavarez (W, 2-4) exited the game after the fifth inning. He allowed five runs on three hits and four walks with six strikeouts. It was the 20-year-old's first win since July 12, which he gave up just one run in 5.2 innings against the Clinton LumberKings.
Sceroler (L, 2-5), the starter opposing Tavarez, was yanked after 4.0 innings. He was roughed up by the Loons to the tune of seven runs on eight hits and four walks. Dayton's bullpen of Cory Thompson and Aneurys Zabala threw 4.0 innings scoreless, but the bats went cold.
J.D. Williams doubled to score Andy Sugilio against Loons reliever Darien Nunez in the sixth, but it was the last time Dayton would find the scoreboard.
Melvin Jimenez (SV, 2) took over for Nunez and threw the final 2.0 innings. He was perfect, striking out three hitters to secure a 7-6 victory for the Loons.
Liput went 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored. Meanwhile, Avans and Cuadrado both dropped in two RBI games. Besides catcher Hunter Feduccia, all members of the Loons starting lineup reached base.
The Loons remain at Dow Diamond for a three-game series against the Bowling Green Hot Rods from Wednesday to Friday.
The Great Lakes Loons have been the Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers since the team's inception in 2007. Dow Diamond serves as the team's home and also houses the Michigan Baseball Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit public charity, and ESPN 100.9-FM.
