
Chiefs Drop Finale to LumberKings 5-3 for Series Split

Peoria, IL - The Clinton LumberKings took the lead in the top of the third and never looked back to beat the Peoria Chiefs 5-3 on Tuesday night. The first-place Chiefs fell to 30-19 in the second half and 69-50 overall as they begin a three-game series at Cedar Rapids on Wednesday at 6:35 p.m.
Dennis Ortega got things going in style for the Chiefs in the top of the first against LumberKings starter Tyler Jackson. Ortega led off by blasting the first pitch he saw over the wall in left for fourth home run of the season as the Chiefs took an early 1-0 lead.
Peoria added to the margin in the bottom of the second. Luken Baker clobbered a leadoff homer to left center that left the bat at 110 mph for his third long ball of the season and a 2-0 advantage. Nick Plummer was hit by a pitch with two outs and he scored from first on a double to right center by Rayder Ascanio for a 3-0 lead.
The LumberKings moved ahead in the top of the third against Chiefs starter Johan Oviedo. Johnny Adams led off with a line drive single to left and advanced to second on a groundout by Connor Hoover. Billy Cooke and Joseph Rosa both drew two-out walks to load the bases. Keegan McGovern hit a grand slam over the wall in right field as the LumberKings grabbed their first lead of the night 4-3.
Clinton added an insurance run in the top of the seventh against CJ Saylor. Hoover singled with two outs and advanced to second on a pickoff throwing error that hit a seat in the stands down the first base line. Rainis Silva singled home Hoover to stretch the advantage to 5-3.
The Chiefs brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth against Sam Delaplane. Ascanio reached on an infield single with one out but Delaplane struck out Ortega and Nolan Gorman to end the game.
Oviedo took the loss (9-8) throwing five innings allowing four runs on three hits with two walks and nine strikeouts. Saylor pitched two innings allowing one run on two hits with no walks and two strikeouts. Fabian Blanco tossed a scoreless and hitless inning in the eighth with two strikeouts. Yokley pitched one scoreless inning allowing one hit with no walks and one strikeout.
Notes...
