Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA - Bryan Abreu, Humberto Castellanos, and Hansel Paulino pitched the Quad Cities River Bandits to a 5-0 shutout Tuesday against the Cedar Rapids Kernels at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Quad Cities (29-22, 69-52) finished with a 10-9 season series victory over Cedar Rapids (31-20, 63-57).
Abreu (4-0) tallied 10 strikeouts including six in a row over the fourth and fifth innings while picking up his second triumph in as many starts against Cedar Rapids this year. He allowed just four hits and one walk in a personal-best six scoreless innings of work.
Castellanos and Paulino each added scoreless relief to complete Quad Cities' third consecutive shutout victory and its Midwest League-high 16th shutout overall. Castellano faced the minimum during the seventh and eighth innings. Paulino tossed a perfect ninth inning at the end of the game.
The River Bandits gained a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Following a leadoff single by Marty Costes and a walk for Michael Papierski, Miguelangel Sierra produced a sacrifice bunt that allowed both runners to advance. Two batters later, Logan Mattix doubled to drive in Costes and Papierski.
Sierra stretched Quad Cities' edge to 4-0 within the top of the fourth. Costes drew an inning-opening walk and stayed at first base on a fly out from Papierski. Sierra belted a two-run blast over the Plumbers & Pipefitters Pavilion in left field to double the River Bandits' lead.
Colton Shaver added a home run of his own during the sixth inning. Shaver hit a solo shot to left field for his team-best 15th round-tripper this season to give Quad Cities its 5-0 winning margin.
Tyler Watson (4-6) was the losing pitcher Tuesday for the Kernels. Watson yielded four hits, four runs, and a career-high-tying five walks over 4.2 innings pitched.
