Bees Lose Sixth Straight After Another Quiet Game on Offense

Geneva, Ill. - Some Bees interns were in Geneva Illinois for last night's game between the Burlington Bees (14-33,44-72) and the Kane County Cougars (25-24,60-58), but their presents wasn't enough for the Bees to pull out a victory, as they fell to Kane County 4-2. Lane Ratliff (5-1) won his fifth contest in just his tenth appearance for Kane County after going six innings, allowing an unearned run, three hits, three walks, and two strikeouts. Jose Soriano (0-6) suffered his sixth loss after going just three and a third innings, allowing two runs, three hits, four walks, and throwing two strikeouts.

Bees take lead on error by Kane County

The Bees had just one baserunner heading in to the top of the fourth, but they got things going after Orlando Martinez and Kevin Williams Jr hit back to back singles to give the Bees runners on first and second with one out. Spencer Griffin drew a walk to load the bases and then Tim Millard reached first on a fielding error by Yan Sanchez in right, allowing Martinez to score and give Burlington a 1-0 lead. The Bees still had the bases loaded, but Kiki Menendez grounded into a six-four-three double play to end the Bees fourth with only one run on the board.

Cougars respond with two in the bottom half

Kane County had some solid scoring chances to score runs early on but couldn't find a big hit to make Soriano pay for the walks he had given up. That changed in the bottom of the fourth though, when Jancarlos Cintron got one with a one out single, and Ryan Grotjohn hit an RBI triple to right to tie the game. Soriano was then replaced by Nick Jobst, but he gave up a single to Eudy Ramos, giving the Cougars their third straight hit and a 2-1 lead. However, like Kane County, the Bees managed to pull a double play to get out of the inning while still being in the game.

Cougars tack on another pair in the sixth

Kane County got a runner in scoring position very quickly after Tim Susnara led the Cougars sixth off with a walk, and Cintron reached first safely on a fielding error by Millard, allowing Susnara to reach third with no outs. After a lineout from Grotjohn, Ramos drove in his second run of the game on a single to center, and Luis Lara hit grounder to first, which allowed Burlington to get Ramos out at second, but Cintron managed to score, giving Kane County a 4-1 lead.

Ninth inning rally comes up short

Although the Bees were down three runs in the top of the ninth, Martinez gave some hope of a comeback after leading off the inning with his tenth double of the season. Although the Williams Jr and Griffin would both commit outs, Millard kept the game alive with a single to center to score Martinez and make the score 4-2. Menendez tried to keep the game going, but flew out to center for the third out, giving Kane County a 4-2 victory.

Cougars keep up solid pitching

Ratliff started his fourth last night, and in all four starts he has been the winning pitcher. He's pitched 26 innings combined in his four starts, while only allowing four runs to bring his ERA down to 2.85. Along with an impressive night from Ratliff, Kane County also got solid production out of their two pitchers who came out of the bullpen. Tyler Keele earned his first hold after going two innings without allowing a baserunner and throwing two strikeouts. Abraham Almonte did allow a run on two hits in his inning of work, but it was still enough to give him his third save of the season.

Jobst struggles in Bees debut

Nick Jobst walked out of the bullpen in a Bees uniform for the first time last night but didn't have the debut he was looking for. In two and two thirds innings, Jobst allowed two runs, one of which was earned, two hits, threw three walks, and one strikeout. Jobst was drafted in the 15th round back in 2016 by Baltimore but made his way to the Angels organization in 2018. Jobst appeared in 15 games while in Orem and allowed 27 runs in in only 26 innings pitched.

Welcome back Carlos

Although last night wasn't his Bees debut, Carlos Salazar made his first appearance of the season for Burlington after getting called back down from Inland. Salazar appeared in nine games for the Empires but had an 0-2 record and a 5.84 ERA. Salazar had a very good 2017 season with the Bees, where he appeared in 20 games, had a 2-0 record, had an ERA of 3.34, and threw 48 strikeouts in 32.1 innings pitched. Salazar went two innings for the Bees last night and allowed just one hit and one walk. The Bees are hoping Salazar can produce similar numbers to his time last season, so they can add another good arm to their bullpen.

Looking Ahead

The Bees and Cougars will conclude their series tomorrow night at 6:30 pm, before Burlington heads home to take on Wisconsin. The Bees haven't announced an expected starter, but Kane County is expected to go with Franklyn Soriano. Soriano has started only three games for the Cougars, has an 0-2 record, and a 4.02 ERA. He allowed three runs and three walks in his last start against Peoria, so the Bees will need to have similar success against him to end their losing streak.
