Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
Cedar Rapids, IA - The Quad Cities River Bandits shut out the Cedar Rapids Kernels for the third straight game in a 5-0 win on Tuesday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Bryan Abreu struck out 10 and combined with two relievers to extend the team's scoreless innings streak to 30.0. The Bandits won the season-series against the Kernels 10-9.
The River Bandits struck first, putting up a crooked number in the second inning. Marty Costes singled to open the inning and then was joined on base when Michael Papierski walked. The runners each advanced 90 feet on a sacrifice bunt from Miguelangel Sierra. With two outs, Logan Mattix hooked a double down the left field line to score both runners and put the Bandits ahead 2-0.
A couple of home runs would help Quad Cities build a larger advantage. The first long ball came off the bat of Miguelangel Sierra in the fourth inning. With Costes on base following a walk, Sierra belted a two-run shot to left field for a 4-0 lead. With two outs in the sixth inning, Colton Shaver tallied his 15th home run of the campaign, a solo shot to left that widened the gap to 5-0.
With his 6.0 scoreless innings, Abreu lowered his earned run average to 0.34 and has now recorded 47 strikeouts in 26.2 innings. Humberto Castellanos followed with 2.0 scoreless innings out of the bullpen and Hansel Paulino retired the side in order in the bottom of the ninth to close out the game.
The River Bandits (29-22, 69-52) return home to meet the Kane County Cougars (26-24, 61-58) on Wednesday night at 6:35 p.m. at Modern Woodmen Park. Taking the mound in game one will be RHP Luis Garcia (5-2, 3.00) for the Bandits and RHP Jayson McKinley (7-3, 3.39) will counter for the Cougars.
All River Bandits games are broadcast on 1170 K-BOB and TuneIn Radio. Home games are also available with video on MiLB.TV.
