Mahoning Valley Scrappers News Release

On his 21st birthday, Matt Esparza delivered four and two-thirds innings of scoreless baseball. In the end, the Scrappers dropped the second game of a three-game set to the Black Bears 3-1 at Eastwood Field.

Esparza got the start in place of Leandro Linares, who came out of the bullpen instead. Esparza struck out five in his four and two-thirds.

Ohio native J.T. Brubaker went four innings and allowed just one earned run on two hits. Like the last two nights, the opponent scored their runs in the sixth inning on. West Virginia scored one in the sixth, and two in the seventh.

The Scrappers got their lone run on a Connor Marabell bunt to score Ka'ai Tom.

For the Black Bears, they scored one in the top of the sixth. Kevin Kramer scored on a Linares balk.

In the seventh, David Andriese doubled to right to score Daniel Arribas. Arribas later scored on an Erik Forgione single to right.

Jodd Carter had two doubles in the game, but the Scrappers offense remained quiet for the most part. Mahoning Valley has scored only one run in its last 19 innings, and three runs in its last 21 innings.

Jerry Mulderig (2-1) gets the win after tossing two scoreless innings. Linares (0-6) takes the loss after allowing three earned in two innings and walking three.

The Scrappers look to avoid a sweep of the Black Bears on Sunday afternoon. Brock Hartson takes the mound for the Scrappers at 4:05. The Black Bears send their All-Star righty Dario Agrazal to the hill.

This is the last home game before the Scrappers head to Auburn and West Virginia for a six-game trip. They'll return home to face State College for four games after the trip.
