Cyclones Offense On Strike In 5-1 Loss At Aberdeen

Aberdeen, MD - The IronBirds took the lead four pitches into the game and never looked back as they defeated the Cyclones by the score of 5-1 on Friday evening. Brooklyn struck out 11 times, and now has 72 punch outs in their last six games.

Brooklyn starter Gaby Almonte (6-5) quickly found himself in trouble this evening, as Cedric Mullins led off the bottom of the first with a triple and the IronBirds immediately had a scoring chance. Ricardo Andujar followed with a double on the first pitch he saw, and four pitches into the game Aberdeen had a 1-0 lead with another runner in scoring position. D.J. Stewart grounded out to second base, advancing Andujar to third, before Chris Shaw singled to plate another run and make it 2-0 at the end of one.

That's how it would stay until the bottom of the fifth, when once again Almonte quickly found himself in a jam. Andujar started the rally with a leadoff double, his second of the night, and came around to score on an RBI single from D.J. Stewart that pushed the Aberdeen advantage to 3-0.

In the top of the sixth, Brooklyn had their lone scoring chance of the night. Manuel Hilario, Alfredo Reyes and Vinny Siena had three straight singles to start the frame and load the bases with nobody out. David Thompson struck out for the first out of the frame before Jeff Diehl had a sacrifice fly that plated Hilario and made it 3-1. Brandon Brosher then worked a walk to reload the bases, but Zach Mathieuflied out to left field to end the frame. With the strikeout by Thompson and fly out by Mathieu, the Cyclones are now hitting .188 (9-48) with 23 strikeouts in bases loaded situations this season.

That would be all the offense for Brooklyn on the night, as they went down in order in the seventh and eight innings. In the bottom of the eight the IronBirds tacked on a pair of insurance runs courtesy of a Drew Turbin two-RBI double that made it 5-1.

The 'Clones had a brief uprising in the top of the ninth, when Diehl reached on an error and Enmanuel Zabala had a two-out single, but Pedro Perez struck out to end the game. Brooklyn has now struck out 520 times in 58 games. There are six teams in the NYPL that have at least 100 fewer strikeouts than Brooklyn.

The loss drops Brooklyn to 27-31 and puts them 2.5 games out in the race for the McNamara Division title. The Cyclones will look to rebound on Saturday evening when they send RHP Andrew Church (1-3, 4.50) to the mound at 7:05 PM for game two-of-three at Ripken Stadium in Aberdeen.
