Lowell Spinners News Release

LOWELL, MASS. - It was a day to forget for the Lowell Spinners as they concluded Saturday's twin bill with a 3-2 loss to the Staten Island Yankees at LeLacheur Park. The loss was the team's fifth straight.

Lowell (30-30) jumped out a 1-0 lead in the bottom half of the first inning. Luis Alexander Basabe led off the inning with a single and promptly stole second base. Basabe then stole third as part of a double-steal and came around to score on a throwing error by Alvaro Noriega.

Staten Island (29-28) evened things at one in the top half of the second inning following a lead-off double by Trey Amburgey. After a groundout moved him to third, Ryan Krill brought him home with a single to the gap to tie things at one.

The Yankees took the lead in the fourth inning when Amburgey took a one-out offering off the top portion of the videoboard, knocking out a panel and giving Staten Island a 2-1 lead.

The Spinners again battled back with their backs against the wall as Victor Acosta led off the seventh with a walk. After attempting to sacrifice him over, Josh Ockimey thought better of it and sprayed a single to right field, moving Acosta to third. Pinch runner Brandon Magee came in for Ockimey and promptly stole second. After Tate Matheny struck out, a Tucker Tubbs sacrifice fly evened the score at two. With Magee on third and two outs, Alixon Suarez narrowly missed a game-winning single down the left field line, only to look at strike three and send the game into extra innings again.

The Spinners had a chance to win again in the ninth after Acosta led off the inning with a double. After Aneudis Peralta sacrificed him to third, Matheny grounded to a pulled in shortstop and Tubbs popped out to end the inning.

It was a costly missed opportunity as Zack Zehner led off the 9th inning with an opposite field solo home run over the right field wall to give the Yankees a 3-2 lead.

Once again down to their last out, the Spinners had a few more fireworks remaining as with two-outs manager Joe Oliver and roving instructor Andy Fox were ejected after the umpires had a chat after it was ruled a foul ball from Suarez and reversed the call to an out. Basabe followed with a two-out single but Tyler Spoon grounded out to end the game.

The Spinners had just five hits in the nightcap, with doubles by both Acosta and De La Guerra and a two-hit game from Basabe.

Logan Boyd started for the Spinners, going a career-high six innings in his first professional start. He struck out six while allowing two runs on five hits. Bobby Poyner followed with two scoreless, allowing two hits while striking out a pair. Enfember Martinez (2-2, 2.38) took the loss, allowing the Zehner home run, striking out one.

The Spinners will look to avoid the sweep Sunday afternoon when Austin Glorius (1-1, 2.79) gets the ball for a 3:05pm first pitch.
