Lowell Spinners News Release

LOWELL, MASS. - Despite being scheduled for just seven innings, the Spinners and Staten Island Yankees needed the full nine in Game One of Saturday's doubleheader, falling to the Yankees, 3-2.

Staten Island (29-27) took the lead in the third inning, taking advantage of a one-out walk and an Austin Rei throwing error. After the Rei error put Jeff Hendrix at third, Zack Zehner singled past the drawn-in infield to give the Yankees a 1-0 lead.

Lowell (30-29) pulled even in the fifth inning taking advantage of a Yankees error on a stolen base attempt. Tate Matheny singled with one out and after it appeared he was picked off, was credited with a stolen base when the throw ended up in left field putting Matheny at third.

The Spinners had a chance to earn the walk-off in the eighth after Rei reached on a two-base error. After Luis Basabe couldn't sacrifice him to third, Jeremy Rivera singled to center but Magee, the NFL linebacker, was thrown out at home on a collision at the plate.

The Yankees pushed ahead one inning later, getting a pair of runs against Michael Gunn. After a one-out walk, Kevin Cornelius doubled to put a pair in scoring position and Brandon Wagner gave Staten Island the lead with a single through the pulled-in infield. After another walk, Ryan Krill brought in another run with a sacrifice fly to give the Yankees a 3-1 lead.

The Spinners attempted to rally in the ninth, as Kyri Washington delivered a one-out single and came around to score on a Mitch Gunsolus double, but pinch-hitter Aneudis Peralta grounded out to end the game.

Dioscar Romero started for the Spinners and was strong, allowing one unearned run on two hits and two walks through six innings. He struck out four. Making his Lowell debut, Gunn (0-1, 6.00) took the loss, allowing two runs on three hits and three walks, striking out two over three innings.

Game Two, with Logan Boyd (3-0, 2.92) on the mound will start in approximately 30 minutes.
