Auburn Doubledays News Release
AUBURN, NY - The Auburn Doubledays fell to the Williamsport Crosscutters Saturday night 9-3 despite a brilliant outing from lefty starting pitcher Matthew Crownover. The victory clinches the season series for the Crosscutters who are now 7-1 against the Doubledays this season.
The first two innings went by in the blink of an eye before the Doubledays struck first in the third. Darryl Florentino led off with a triple to right and eventually scored two batters later when Jake Jefferies grounded out to first. With the bases clear and two outs, Max Schrock singled into right and advanced to second on an error by Williamsport's right fielder Jose Pujols. Kelvin Gutierrez then knocked in Schrock with a double to right to give the Doubledays a 2-0 lead.
The fourth inning went by quickly as well thanks to Matthew Crownover. The Doubledays' lefty starter retired the first 12 Crosscutters he faced before ultimately giving up a single to Pujols in the fifth. Crownover pitched five brilliant innings for Auburn and left in line for the win with the Doubledays up 2-0 after five. The lefty's line: 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, and 3 K's.
Crownover was replaced by Luis Torres in the sixth. Torres quickly gave up two runs in the sixth on a walk to William Cuicas, a double by Venn Biter, and a single by Josh Tobias. After five and a half, the game was tied at 2-2.
In the top of the seventh, the Crosscutters were threatening with the bases loaded and two outs. Sam Johns replaced Torres on the hill and struck out Williamsport's leadoff hitter Zach Coppola to end the threat. Johns was back on the hill in the eighth when Williamsport took a lead it would never give up. Biter and Tobias both reached on an errors before Pujols grounded into a fielder's choice and Brendon Hayden popped out to second. With runners on first and third with no outs in the eighth, the Cutters railed. Jan Hernandez tripled, Gregory Brodzinski doubled, and Luis Espiritu singled to give Williamsport a 6-2 lead.
The Doubledays responded quickly in the bottom of the eighth. Schrock singled with one out and came around to score when Wiseman doubled into right to put the score at 6-3 before Williamsport rallied again with two outs in the ninth.
Coppola led off the ninth when he reached on a dropped third strike. Coppola, Biter, and Pujols all scored in the ninth on singles by Biter and Pujols along with a double by Hernandez. Heading into the bottom of the ninth, Auburn trailed Williamsport 9-3.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Doubledays' 6-7-8 hitters were set down in order and fell to the Crosscutters 9-3.
The Doubledays return to Falcon Park Sunday at 5:05 PM for the series finale. Taylor Hearn (1-4, 2.84 ERA) gets the start for Auburn against Mitch Gueller (7-1, 1.84 ERA) for Williamsport.
