Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
GARY, Ind. - The Gary SouthShore RailCats and Craig Maddox treated fans at U. S. Steel Yard to walk-off thriller as the 'Cats took a 2-0 series advantage with a 4-3 extra inning win over the Sioux City Explorers Tuesday night extended the winning streak to a season long four games.
The RailCats improve to 13-12 through the first quarter of the season and 4-2 in extra innings in 2011. The 'Cats remain in second place in the Central Division of the American Association of Independent Professional Baseball despite being over the .500 mark for the first time since May 17.
Gary's own Lorenzo Scott stole the show for the 'Cats with scoring the game tying run on a line drive homer to right field in the sixth inning and the game clinching run in the bottom of the tenth on Maddox's single to the wall over the drawn-in outfield. Mike Massaro also continued his hot hitting going 3-5 in the contest with a pair of RBI in addition to a double and a triple.
Another excellent performance by the RailCats bullpen was instrumental in the victory. Starter Scott Shaw struggled with his command this evening walking seven and hitting a batter but battled to keep the RailCats in the ballgame, allowing just three runs in his four innings of work despite X's on base in every inning. The combination of Jeremy Hauer, Brian Grening and James Baker, who earned the victory to improve to 2-0 on the season, combined to hold the X's scoreless over the final seven innings surrendering just three hits while striking out six Sioux City hitters.
The Explorers took an early 3-0 lead grabbing a run in the second and a pair in the third. With one out in the second, Kent Sakamoto singled and Ray Serrano and Wally Backman each drew a walk to load the bases. A Tyler Goodro single gave the visitors a 1-0 lead but Shaw worked out of the jam to keep it a one-run deficit after two. In the second, T.J. Bohn doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Serrano. The three run advantage came when Shaw walked Goodro with the bases loaded.
The 'Cats answered with a pair of runs in the home half of the third. Catcher Mike Valadez led off the inning with a single and advanced to second when Adam Klein drew a walk. The next batter, Massaro belted a double to right driving in both Massaro and Klein.
Gary resident Scott evened the score at three as he sprinted around the bases in the sixth following his first homer as a member of the RailCats and just the third on the season for Northwest Indiana's premier professional sports franchise.
After Scott singled and stole second to leadoff the tenth, Mike Rohde's fly ball to right allowed Scott to advance to third setting the stage for the Maddox heroics.
NOTES: Brian Kolb remains tied with Chris Carrara and Mike Rohde for the longest hitting streaks of the season as his hitting streak was snapped at six games...Adam Klein's five game hitting streak is also in the books leaving Mike Massaro's five gamer as the longest current streak for the 'Cats...Tonight's game was the second walk-off win for the 'Cats at U. S. Steel Yard with the other being May 24 when Jeff Beachum won the game with a 12th inning single...The Explorers had the go ahead run on third in the ninth and tenth before James Baker managed to strand them both there
