St. Paul Saints News Release

SHREVEPORT, LA (June 8, 2011) - When the St. Paul Saints look back at their 13-game roadtrip it will be considered a huge success in every facet, but for one night two streaks came to an end in their 9-5 loss to the Shreveport-Bossier Captains on Wednesday night at Fair Grounds Field. The first was the team's five game win streak and the second was an 18-game win streak by starter Donald Brandt.

Not since September 11, 2009 had Brandt lost a game when he was pitching for the Helena Brewers. That night he pitched 1.0 inning of relief and gave up three runs on two hits receiving the loss. After going 15-0 last season in Maui and beginning the 2011 season 3-0, he tasted the bitterness of defeat for the first time in a while.

The Saints got on the board in the top of the first when Kevin Thompson singled, stole second and scored on Jason Cooper's RBI single, extending his hitting streak to 14 games and giving the Saints a 1-0 lead.

The Captains, however, answered back and scored often. In the bottom of the first Bryan Sabatella hit a two-out homer to left, his third of the season, tying the game at one.

In the second Palmer Karr Jr. hit a solo homer to left, his second of the season, giving the Captains a 2-1 lead. They would tack on two more in the inning on an RBI single from Joe Urtuzuastegui and a sacrifice fly from Bryan Frichter to make it 4-1.

Each time the Saints answered, which they did in the top of the third on a triple by Adam Frost and an RBI ground out from Thompson to make it 4-2, the Captains wasted little time in countering. In the bottom of the inning they took a 5-2 lead on Andres Rodriguez' RBI triple.

Brandt would last just 3.1 innings allowing six runs on seven hits while walking four and striking out three receiving the loss and dropping to 3-1 on the season.

With the Saints trailing 9-3 in the eighth it seemed like the only drama left was if Brandon Tripp could extend his hitting streak which he did with an RBI double in the eighth. He has now hit safely in 17 straight.

Ronnie Bourquin also extended his hitting streak to 11 games going 3-4, falling a single shy of the cycle with an RBI and two runs scored.

The Saints finished the roadtrip 9-4 and will return home in first place with a record of 17-8 at the quarter point of the season.

The Saints have Thursday off and return to Midway Stadium Friday evening at 7:05 p.m. against the Gary SouthShore Railcats. The Saints send RHP Alberto Rolon (3-0, 1.61) to the mound. It is "O" de to Oprah Night, Friday Night Fireworks presented by Xcel Energy and Big Money Day presented by St. Croix Casino as fans have a chance to win between $77-$77,777. The game can be heard live on Relevant Radio 1330.
