
Machado Leads Shorebirds To 5-2 Win In Game Three

Salisbury, Md. - Manny Machado recorded the game tying home run and the eventual game-winning RBI double as the Delmarva Shorebirds (11-9) topped the Savannah Sand Gnats (7-12) 5-2 on Wednesday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium. The Shorebirds are now riding a season long seven-game win streak. Delmarva outhit Savannah 11-5 but did not take their first lead until the bottom of the seventh inning. The Shorebirds have secured the series win.
After going the first 15 games of the season without a home run, Machado has one home run in each of the last three games. The Shorebirds and Sand Gnats have combined for 11 home runs through the first three games of the series.
The Sand Gnats jumped on the board in the second inning. With one out, Blake Forsythe hit a solo home run to left field.
The Shorebirds responded in the third inning. Ty Kelly led off with a single back up the middle. Two batters later, Brenden Webb singled. Then, Jonathan Schoop hit an RBI single to bring home Kelly.
Savannah regained the lead in the fourth inning courtesy of another home run. Aderlin Rodriguez hit his third homer of the year to lift Savannah in front 2-1.
In the sixth inning, Manny Machado hit a mammoth home run that flew over the scoreboard in left-center field to tie the game at 2-2.
The Shorebirds grabbed their first lead of the night in the seventh. Steve Bumbry ignited the rally with a double into right-center field. Two batters later, Machado ripped a double to the left field wall to give the Shorebirds a 3-2 edge. After Pope reached on a error by Aderlin Rodriguez, Kipp Schutz hit a flare single into left-center field to plate Pope. The Shorebirds extended the lead to 5-2 on a pop up beyond first base by Mike Flacco that was overrun by Luis Nieves.
Clay Schrader entered in the seventh inning and fanned five of the seven batters faced to earn his first win of the season. David Walters came on in the ninth inning to pick up his sixth save of the season.
Shorebirds starter Scott Copeland tossed six innings and allowed five hits and two runs.
The Shorebirds and Sand Gnats play game four of the series on Thursday, April 28 at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium. LHP Tim Berry makes the start for the âBirds.
