Power Surge Covers Suns in Game Two

Hagerstown, MD- The Hagerstown Suns (11-8) were downed by the West Virginia Power (7-11) on Tuesday night at Appalachian Power Park, despite hitting three deep flies in the contest 8-5. Power RHP Tyler Waldron (3-1), the winning pitcher, tossed 5.0 innings and allowed two earned runs on six hits, while striking out five and walking none.

The Suns struck first in the opening inning as RF Bryce Harper tattooed the first pitch he saw from Waldron over the right field wall and out towards the adjacent ballpark avenue, his fourth home run of the season.

West Virginia bats answered with three runs in the bottom of the 1st inning as LF Rogelio Noris lined a 2-run double just inside the third base line into the left field corner. Then, CF Mel Rojas Jr. went the opposite way to right field for an RBI single to give the home club a 3-1 lead.

Hagerstown LHP Matt Grace (1-3), the losing pitcher, would get knocked around for six runs, four earned, on eight hits and walked one to go with four strikeouts.

A strange play occurred in the top of the 3rd inning as CF Michael Taylor ripped a solo home run to right center field, but it was erased on a technicality as the Power appealed to base umpire, Roberto Ortiz saying that Taylor did not touch the first base bag. Waldron threw to first base and Taylor was called out, overturning the home run blast. Following the call, Suns skipper Brian Daubach was ejected from the game by home plate umpire Jose Esteras. Once the inning was concluded, both benches and bullpens cleared after Harper was called out on strikes and engaged in a war of words with Waldron. Order would be restored shortly after.

Power bats garnered one run in the 3rd inning on a sacrifice fly by DH Dan Grovatt to center field, scoring Noris, who singled to center. In the 4th inning two West Virginia runs were plated on a 2-run four bagger by 1B Matt Curry, his fourth of the 2011 campaign.

In the top of the 5th frame, Taylor would hit his second homer of the game, this time it was one that counted. Taylor lofted an identical solo jack that bounced in back of the fence, his first of the season.

In the last of the sixth stanza, Power 2B Gift Ngoepe sliced an RBI double to left center, scoring CF Kawika Emsley-Pai after he reached on a fielder's choice, giving West Virginia a 7-2 advantage.

In the away half of the 7th inning, 1B Brett Newsome went the other way to left center field with a looping solo home run, his first of the year. An additional run scored on an RBI single by 3B Blake Kelso to center field, scoring Taylor, who walked.

Suns C David Freitas would claw one run back in the 8th inning as he scored on a wild pitch by RHP Jason Townshend (1 SV in 1 SVO) to cut the Power lead to 3 runs.

Townshend would shut down the Suns with three consecutive groundballs to the SS Drew Maggi in the 9th inning to earn the two inning save and ensure West Virginia's first win of the series. The set is now tied at one win a piece.

The Hagerstown Suns will clash with the West Virginia Power for Game Three at Appalachian Power Park on Wednesday night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm. Reports indicate that Pittsburgh Pirates 2010 first round draft pick, RHP Jameson Taillon, who is scheduled to be activated from extended Spring Training, will make an appearance in the contest, which would pit two fellow top 5 draft selections against each other with Suns RF Bryce Harper, MLB's number one overall draft pick, in the lineup for Hagerstown.
