Charleston RiverDogs News Release

LAKEWOOD, N.J. - Zach Nuding breezed through a career-best 6.2 innings to lead the Charleston RiverDogs over the Lakewood BlueClaws, 6-1, in South Atlantic League action Wednesday afternoon in front of a crowd of 3,715 fans at FirstEnergy Park.

Nuding (3-0) was brilliant in becoming the first RiverDogs starter to work into the seventh inning this season, surrendering a run on five hits. The Fort Worth native yielded just one hit over the first six frames as he let his defense do most of the work for him while managing to fan two batters along the way.

Charleston erupted for five runs on five hits to take a 6-0 lead in the fourth. Ramon Flores singled, and Rob Segedin and Kyle Roller followed with walks to load the bases for Kelvin De Leon. Lakewood starter Jesse Biddle (0-3) retired the powerful De Leon on strikes, but could not get past Jose Mojica. The RiverDogs shortstop ripped a double into left field to chase in two runs and force Biddle from the game, in favor of Juan Sosa.

Sosa did not fare much better, though, allowing an RBI single to Slade Heathcott to advance the RiverDogs advantage to 4-0. Anderson Feliz stepped in next and drove an opposite field double to plate Mojica, and Murphy capped off the rally with a sharp grounder through the middle for his second RBI of the day.

Two of Charleston's most reliable offensive cogs combined to register a 1-0 first inning lead off Biddle. Heathcott laced a double down the left field line, and Murphy brought him home with a double of his own.

Biddle, the Phillies' 2010 first round pick, was unable to put an end to his early-season struggles. The southpaw lasted just 3.1 innings, allowing five runs on five hits and four walks, striking out three.

The BlueClaws pieced together four singles to get on the scoreboard and force Nuding from the mound in the seventh. Aaron Altherr stroked an opposite field single to right to cut the Lakewood deficit to five and prompt Aaron Ledesma to call down to Tommy Kahnle in the Charleston bullpen.

Kahnle proceeded to walk Steven Batts and load the bases, but the Division II Lynn University product caught Anthony Hewitt looking to keep the 6-1 lead intact.

Manny Barreda emerged out of the bullpen to nail down the victory with a 1-2-3 ninth, as the RiverDogs broke a three-game losing skid.

The RiverDogs and BlueClaws hook up in game four of the extended five-game set Thursday at 6:35 pm. Right-hander Shane Greene (1-2, 5.40 ERA) is expected to pitch for Charleston, versus right-hander Colby Shreve (1-2, 5.54 ERA) of Lakewood, the Phillies' sixth round pick in the 2008 draft.
