Mississippi Braves News Release

Montgomery, AL - The Mississippi Braves poured on a slew of early runs and chased prospect Chris Archer after just four innings, then held off a Montgomery Biscuits rally to win 8-5 on Monday night at Riverwalk Stadium

The win was the M-Braves' fourth straight and sixth in their last seven games.

21-year-old right hander Zeke Spruill was at his best, tossing seven innings of one-run baseball en route to his third win with Mississippi (28-29, 53-74). He allowed only five hits and struck out one.

Meanwhile, the Braves posted a four-run fourth inning to chase Archer. Already leading 1-0 after Ernesto Mejia's RBI single in the first, Antoan Richardson reached on a two out walk, starting a stretch of five straight to reach. Mycal Jones was hit by a pitch, and Dan Nelson drove both in with a triple down the right field line. Two pitches later, Mejia homered on a line drive to left, his 21st of the season to stake the Braves to a 5-0 lead.

Two more runs crossed in the sixth off of reliever Neil Schenk behind more Mejia heroics. Nelson walked to lead off the inning, then Mejia hit a hard fly ball to right which was dropped by John Matulia. Two batters later, Cory Harrilchak singled to plate two unearned runs and take a 7-0 lead.

Montgomery (27-30, 61-66) made things interesting in the eighth. Trailing 7-1, Matulia came up with the bases loaded and one out, hitting a 3-1 Kawakami fastball over the right field wall for a grand slam, his seventh home run of the year.

Mississippi added an insurance run in the ninth, though, and Billy Bullock earned his 11th save of the year.

The M-Braves look for their fifth straight win on Tuesday night at 7:05 PM behind the left arm of Luis Avilan. The Biscuits send right-handed pitcher Shane Dyer to the hill. Listen live beginning at 6:30 PM at WYAB 103.9 FM, or online at MississippiBraves.com.
