Mobile BayBears News Release
MOBILE, Ala. - Despite leaving 13 men on base and going 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position, the BayBears made that one hit count as Ed Easley's walk-off single in the bottom of the 10th carried the BayBears to a 2-1 win over the Jackson Generals on Tuesday night at Hank Aaron Stadium.
A.J. Pollock extended his hitting streak to 14 games as he doubled down the left field line to begin the bottom of the 10th against Edward Parades (1-2). Daryle Ward was walked intentionally before Taylor Harbin laid down a sac fly to push each runner over a base. Marc Krauss was passed freely to bring Easley to the dish, and he ripped a 2-0 fastball to left, scoring Pollock with the game-winner.
Tyler Skaggs started for the BayBears (77-50, 39-18) and tossed a career-high nine innings while limiting Jackson (62-66, 24-34) to just a run on two hits. He needed just 86 pitches to go through nine frames while retiring the last 10 hitters he faced and 17 of the final 18.
Skaggs's only mistake came in the top of the fourth when Nick Franklin lofted a homer to left, tying the score at 1-1. The BayBears picked up the initial advantage in the third when Easley singled and scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Jake Elmore.
Jackson starter James Gillheeney lasted 6.2 innings while walking five. He left with two outs in the seventh as Stephen Penney guided him through the final out. The BayBears left the go-ahead run in scoring position in each of the last three innings including the bases loaded in the ninth. Mike DeMark (2-2) tossed a perfect top of the 10th for the BayBears in place of Skaggs.
The BayBears lead in the South Division by 10.5 games with their magic number to clinch a South Division second half crown at 3. The BayBears host the Generals on Wednesday night at 7:05 in the fourth of their five-game series as they continue the final homestand of the regular season. Right-hander Charles Brewer (4-1) starts for the BayBears against fellow righty Steven Hensley (3-7).
