Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release
PEARL, Miss. - The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (10-17) fell to the Mississippi Braves (12-13) by a 2-1 score in the second game of the five-game series at Trustmark Park on Thursday night.
Mississippi left-handed starting pitcher Joey Wentz (1-1) earned the victory, working seven scoreless innings where he only one hit with one walk and five strikeouts. Wentz started the game with six perfect innings, before he walked Magneuris Sierra to start the seventh, then Corey Bird followed with Jacksonville's only hit against him. Jacksonville left-handed starting pitcher McKenzie Mills (1-4) took the loss, allowing two runs (both earned) on four hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Mississippi right-hander Huarscar Ynoa got the final six outs of the game to record his first save.
Mississippi scored first in the bottom of the first when a Ryan Casteel groundout to third scored Drew Waters from third base to build a 1-0 lead. The Braves added to the advantage in the bottom of the second on a Ray-Patrick Didder sacrifice fly to center that scored Connor Lien to make it 2-0.
John Silviano started Jacksonville's top of the ninth by ripping a double to right field. With two outs and the Shrimp down to their last strike, Justin Twine delivered an RBI single to center to score Silviano to make it a 2-1 game. The next batter Joe Dunand grounded out to third to end the game in a one-run Braves win.
Parker Bugg and Jordan Milbrath both turned in scoreless innings of relief in the seventh and eighth.
The Jumbo Shrimp and Braves will continue their series with the third game of the five-game set on Friday night at 7:35 p.m. eastern. Right-handed pitcher Robert Dugger (1-4, 4.50 ERA) will start for Jacksonville against Mississippi left-handed pitcher Tucker Davidson (0-0, 0.95 ERA).
