LYNX ACQUIRE THREE, SAY GOODBYE TO TWO AT TRADE DEADLINE: The Augusta Lynx were one of the busiest teams as the ECHL trading deadline came and went this past Tuesday. Augusta Lynx Head Coach Bob Ferguson announced that the Lynx acquired forwards Anthony Battaglia and Travis Fuller along with defenseman Chris Brooks from Columbia Inferno, in exchange for defenseman Eric Lundberg and forward Jeremy Schenderling. Battaglia, 28, comes to the Lynx after playing 50 games this season for the Columbia Inferno, scoring 22 points including five goals and 17 assists. This will not be the first go around for Battaglia in a Lynx uniform. He spent the majority of the 2005-06 season with the Lynx, scoring 36 points in 49 games played during that season. Brooks, 25, comes to the Lynx from the Inferno, but was traded earlier on Tuesday to Columbia from the Wheeling Nailers. Brooks played in all 56 games for the Nailers this season, including both times against the Lynx on November 11th and February 6th. Fuller, 22, may be the most intriguing of the bunch. He was acquired by the Lynx after the Inferno picked him up earlier from the Cincinnati Cyclones. Fuller has posted good numbers this year with Cincinnati, scoring 25 points, including 13 goals in just 43 games played. Fuller was 3rd in rookie scoring on the Cyclones roster before the trade.

Goulet remains one goal away from tying Jonas Soling's career mark of 90. Soling played during the first three seasons for the Lynx in Augusta from 1998-2001. Goulet thought he had tied the mark this past Saturday with Augusta's first goal against the Gwinnett Gladiators when the scorers credited Goulet with Augusta's first goal, but it was later corrected and given to Shane Hynes.

The week that was:
Tuesday, March 4, Texas Wildcatters 3 @ Augusta Lynx 1
Texas Wildcatters got their only win so far this season against the Augusta Lynx with a workmanlike 3-1 victory on Tuesday at the James Brown Arena. The Lynx were plagued again back a lack of scoring and now have only found the back of the net four times during their four-game losing streak. The Wildcatters began the scoring midway through the 1st period as Marc Fulton puck up a loose puck in front after a shot from the point from A.J. Thelen and slipped one underneath #1 Gerald Coleman for a 1-0 lead. The Wildcatters made it 2-0, again on the power play, with the eventual game-winning goal from Thelen, who one-timed a slapshot from 55 feet past an outstretched Coleman with assists to Dan Welch and Fulton. The Lynx got on the board for the first time in five periods with a power play goal from #20 Matt Auffrey, his 21st of the season. Auffrey received a pass from #9 Louis Goulet and one-timed a shot from th slot that hit #21 Bobby Bolt, rebounded back to Auffrey who was able to slip it past Wildcatters goaltender Kris Tebbs. That is all Tebbs and Texas would allow the rest of the night, as the Lynx power play went powerless the rest of the night. Any chance of a comeback in the 3rd period was squashed by the 3rd and final goal off the stick of Texas forward Max Taylor, who picked up a rebound shot from the point to send it past a sprawled Coleman. The Lynx held the Wildcatters to 20 shots on goal the entire night and just two in the 3rd period, but could not manage more than Auffrey's goal. The Lynx record falls to .500 for the first time since November 17th.
Saturday, March 8, Augusta Lynx 3 @ Gwinnett Gladiators 8
The Augusta Lynx losing streak hit a season-high five games with a 8-3 loss at Gwinnett on Saturday night. The game started on the right note for the Lynx as they scored the game's first goal thanks to a shorthanded marker from #9 Louis Goulet. Goulet crept in on a 2 on 1 with #22 Shane Hynes and Goulet's original shot was stopped by Craig Kowalski, but the rebound went off a Gladiators defenseman's skate for the goal. (note: goal was credited to Hynes the next day) However, Gwinnett responded with a flurry of three goals in a little more than two minutes. The first came on the power play as Chad Painchaud slapped home a back door pass to tie the game at 1-1. Seconds later, Andy Brandt made it 2-1 with a rebound goal in front after #30 Bobby Goepfert made the original save from the point, but couldn't control the rebound. Painchaud got his second goal of the night to make it 3-1, as he deked around two Lynx players and slid a puck underneath Goepfert. However, the Lynx responded with a great goal on the power play from #22 Shane Hynes, his first of the season. #25 Adrian Veideman made the play happen by bringing the puck in down low on the power play. As Veideman set up behind the net, he saw Hynes streaking in front as slipped him the pass as Hynes put one underneath Kowalski as they Lynx closed the gap. The 2nd period was all Gwinnett as they scored two goals, including a hat-trick from Painchaud. Ryan Mahrle added the 5th Gwinnett goal as he shot from the point tipped off a Lynx player past Goepfert's glove. The best chance for the Lynx in the period came off the stick of new defenseman #3 B.J. Crum, who got a pass from behind the net from #7 Travis Fuller, but Crum's shot rang off the crossbar, then the post and stayed out. The 3rd period wouldn't get any better for the Lynx as the Gladiators scored three more goals from Jeff Mason, Joe Grimaldi, and Jamie Milam to make it 8-2. The Lynx did get their 2nd shorthanded goal of the night with less than a minute remaining as newcomer #7 Travis Fuller, slid the puck underneath Kowalski after a good pass from #21 Bobby Bolt. The Lynx have now dropped 8 of their last nine games, including the last five. The Gladiators outshot the Lynx 48-35 for the game.
Sunday, March 9, Gwinnett Gladiators 2 @ Augusta Lynx 1
Sunday was another one of those games that the Augusta Lynx thought they did enough to win, but they were denied yet again by a stellar goaltending performance from the Gladiators Craig Kowalski who stole the show with 44 saves in a 2-1 loss for the Lynx on Sunday at the James Brown Arena. The Gladiators got the game off to a fast start with the game's first two goals. The first came off of leading scorer's Jeff Campbell's stick as he got free on a 4 on 2 and roofed a shot over the glove of #1 Gerald Coleman for a 1-0 lead. The Lynx had four power plays in the 1st period, but could not make any of them count. During the fourth power play Chad Denny got free for the Gladiators, as he beat the backcheckers down the ice and took a pass in the slot and beat an outstretched Coleman for a shorthanded goal and a 2-0 Gladiators lead after the 1st period. The 2nd and 3rd periods was all Lynx, as they outshot the Gladiators by an astonishing 33-5 in the final two periods, but the goaltender of Kowalski was the difference. In the 3rd, the Lynx hit two posts before getting a goal from #10 Chase Watson, who tipped home a drive from the point by #3 B.J. Crum putting the Lynx on the board. With Coleman pulled for the extra attacker at the end of the game, the Lynx mounted few offensive chances and ultimately fell, 2-1. The Lynx went 0 for 7 on the power play, while the Gladiators were 0 for 3.
