Alaska Aces News Release

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Milan Gajic broke a 3-3 tie with a power play goal at 9:22 of the third period as Victoria salvaged the finale of a three-game series with Alaska, 4-3, before 4,665 Sunday at Sullivan Arena.

Neither club ever led by more than one goal in any of the three games, with the Aces winning the first two by scores of 3-2 and 4-3. The Salmon Kings broke out to a 1-0 lead on Sunday when Marc-Andre Bernier scored the first of two shorthanded goals for the visitors on a breakaway at 4:10 of the opening period. Josh Soares answered for Alaska with his first goal in eight games and 26th of the season, a power play tally that created a 1-1 deadlock with 4:32 remaining in the frame.

F.P. Guenette scored his first goal in nine games against his former team to push the Aces in front, 2-1, at 8:54 of the second period, and Alaska had two subsequent power play opportunities to extend that lead. But on the second of those chances, Victoria's Wes Goldie forced a turnover and Kevin Estrada converted the ensuing breakaway for another shorthanded goal, one that tied the game 2-2 with 3:32 left in the middle frame. Three minutes later, Goldie himself scored on a power play, and suddenly, the Salmon Kings found themselves back in front heading to the third period.

Aces defenseman Lee Green briefly tied the game with his second goal of the season (both of which have come against Victoria) at 8:04 of the third period, but Alaska immediately took a penalty, and Gajic scored the winner on a rebound less than 90 seconds later. The loss ended an eight-game winning streak at home for the Aces, and marked just their second in the last 15 games overall. Goaltender Mike Brown saw his personal six-game winning streak come to an end, as he finished with 22 saves in absorbing his first defeat since February 9.

Now 34-21-5 and four points out of the West Division lead, shared by Idaho and Victoria, Alaska embarks on a two-week road trip, beginning with a game at Fresno Wednesday and a pair at Bakersfield Friday and Saturday. All three games begin at 6:00 p.m. ADT and will be broadcast live on AM 750 KFQD, with coverage beginning 15 minutes prior to face-off.
