Devils Battle Valiantly At Home

March 10, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
Trenton Devils News Release

TRENTON, NJ - The Trenton Devils had plenty of comeback rallies this past weekend, but were ultimately foiled in all three games they played. Trenton scored four unanswered goals to pull within one against Elmira on Friday and was within a goal of tying the game against Wheeling on Saturday, but both the Jackals and Nailers found a way to hold on. When combined with Johnstown's three-goal flurry in the second period, those contests made for a tough weekend in the Capital City. The Devils are in sixth place in the North Division with a record of 21-32-3-5.

JACKALS HOLD ON: Trenton fell behind at the first intermission after a five-goal outburst from Elmira. But the Devils refused to be discouraged, and rallied for four unanswered markers to make the game close in the third period. Joe Rooney started the drive with a shorthanded tally in the second frame, while Jim Henkel, Stephen Wood, and Brad Mills found the back of the net in the third. A Benoit Doucet blast from the right circle with four minutes to go would end the Devils' hopes, giving Elmira the insurance goal it needed to win, 6-4.

WHEELING REBOUNDS: After slicing through the Nailers in a two-game sweep last weekend, the Devils tasted their own medicine in a 4-2 loss. Trenton pumped a season-high 55 shots at Curtis Darling, but the netminder stopped 53 of them. Jim Henkel extended his goal-scoring streak to five games with two tallies in the second period, each of which brought the Devils to within one. In the end, Darling was just too tough, and a Kelly Miller shorthanded goal iced the game.

JOHNSTOWN POWERS PAST: Thomas Harrison foiled a shutout bid by the Chiefs' Andrew Penner with 5.3 seconds left in the game, getting the Devils on the board in a 4-1 loss. Harrison's blast from the top point snuck past Penner to the right side post, and came on Trenton's 37th and final shot. Johnstown potted three goals into the back of the net in the second period, including two less than a minute apart.

QUICK HITS: Jim Henkel had a five-game goal streak snapped on 3/9... The alternate captain had 6 goals and 8 points in that span... Eric Castonguay has six assists in his past four games... Ryan Gunderson is tied for fourth in ECHL defensemen scoring (40 points, 4g, 36a)... He leads all rookies in the category... Thomas Harrison leads the ECHL in major penalties with 24, all but one of which came on a fighting foul... Trenton is 12-2-0 when leading after the second frame... The Devils are 10-1-1-2 when scoring four goals or more... Trenton is 13-7-0-0 when scoring first.
