Augusta Lynx News Release
ELMIRA, NY − Another late third period goal allowed the Lynx (1-2-1) to earn a point but Wes Cunningham scored the overtime winner for Elmira as the Jackals defeated the Lynx 4-3 at First Arena on Friday night.
Aaron Slattengren tied the game with 4:23 left in the third period when he fired the rebound into the back of the net. Matt Auffrey took the initial shot and Slattengren banged in the second shot. The Lynx rallied from three one-goal deficits to earn the point.
Elmira opened the scoring at 5:16 of the first period when Moises Guitierrez fired a shot past Riku Helenius to make it 1-0. Justin Keller, playing in his first ECHL game, tied the game at one when he put the puck past Elmira goaltender Mitch O'Keefe. Late in the period though, the Jackals took the lead back when Josh Aspenlind on a 3 on 3 filtered through the Lynx defense to put Elmira ahead 2-1 after twenty minutes of play.
Dallas Steward would tie the game with just 4.4 seconds left in the second period after a great individual effort by Slattengren. O'Keefe did not cover the puck and Steward rushed in to deposit the puck and tied the game at two.
The league's leading scorer Tyler Donati gave Elmira a one goal lead again at 4:07 of the third period but the Lynx did not go away as they tied the game at three on Slattengren's third goal of the season.
Augusta shut down all 11 Elmira power plays including a 5 on 3 late in the third period and an overtime man advantage for the Jackals. The Lynx out shot Elmira 34 to 25.
The Lynx play the second of the two games against Elmira on Saturday night at 7:35 p.m. before closing up the Northern trip in Reading on Sunday.
The Lynx return to James Brown Arena on Friday, November 7 to take on the Charlotte Checkers at 7:30 p.m. for Support the Troops and NASCAR Night. Showcars from Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt, Sr. will be on hand. Season tickets, group tickets, and birthday packages are all available by calling the Lynx at 706-724-4423 or by logging onto www.augustalynx.com.
