Mississippi Sea Wolves News Release
BILOXI, MS - The Charlotte Checkers were able to pull out an overtime win by the score of 5-4 over the Mississippi Sea Wolves in a wild contest at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum on Saturday evening.
After a scoreless first period that featured a lot of end to end action, Mark Rooneem broke in alone on Charlotte goaltender Jeff Jakaitis and made a move to the backhand to score just 21 seconds into the second period to give the Sea Wolves a 1-0 lead. Ryan Cruthers scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season on a one-timer from the low slot that beat Jakaitis through the legs at 4:51 of period two to give Mississippi a 2-0 lead.
After being hauled down on a breakaway by the Pack's Kyle McAllister, Charlotte's Matthew Ford scored on his penalty shot to get the Checkers on the board at 14:58 of the second period.
For only the second time in team history, two penalty shots were awarded in a game as Kyle McAllister converted on his penalty shot, tucking the puck past Jakaitis' right goal pad at 18:16.
Charlotte would even the score at three apiece as Andres Jamtin scored his first of the year shorthanded at 2:19 of the third period. Mathieu Melanson bounced a wrister off of the arm of Jakaitis and into the net for his third goal of the year to give the Sea Wolves a 4-3 lead at 15:45 of the third, but Mike Bayrack was able to notch a goal with an extra attacker on for the Checkers, launching a wrister through a screen and past Mississippi goaltender Jeremy Duchesne 19:36 of the third period.
Tomas Zaborsky walked out from behind the Sea Wolves net and fed the puck to Mike Taylor waiting at the left post for the overtime winner 55 seconds into the extra session.
Jeremy Duchesne made 37 saves in 60:55 of work to earn a no-decision, and the Sea Wolves were 0-for-5 on the power play.
The Sea Wolves finish out their three-in-three series against the Checkers tomorrow afternoon at 5:05 p.m. Wear your Halloween costume and trick-or-treat with the Sea Wolves after the game. For tickets, call (228) 275-WOLF!
