Lynx Defeat Grrrowl 4-2

December 12, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
Augusta Lynx News Release

A pair of power play goals set the stage for Joe Sewell to score his first goal in an Augusta uniform for the game winner on Friday night in a 4-2 defeat of the Greenville Grrrowl at the Augusta Richmond County Civic Center.

Back and forth action marked the opening period of play, with both teams putting solid scoring chances on net, only to be thwarted by the goaltending of Jason Saal for the Lynx, and Michel Robinson for the Grrrowl. Robinson took away a great chance in front from Jonathan Gagnon, and turned aside Greg Jacina as well from point-blank range. Saal, meanwhile, made back-to-back stops in front of his own net late in the period to keep the game scoreless. Both teams went 0-for-1 on the power play in the first period.

Second period action would prove to be a power play bonanza, with each team scoring twice, and three of the four goals coming with the man advantage. Augusta scored first while a man up for a 1-0 lead courtesy of Martin Lapointe's goal at 2:30 from Jason Saal. Lapointe went the length of the ice, through the four Greenville defenders, and fired a shot over the shoulder of Robinson for his fourth goal of the season. Then Greenville would notch a power play goal of its own at 8:50 from Chris Lynch. Han Sung Kim's goal, his third against the Lynx this season, gave the Grrrowl a 2-1 lead, but then Louis Goulet would score Augusta's second man advantage marker of the game at 18:47, breaking hard to the right wing and cutting to the slot before firing the puck just inside the far post past the poke-checking Robinson to even the game at 2-2 from Lapointe and Saal.

Both teams saw scoring chances go by the boards early in the third period, with Saal and Robinson staying sharp. But at 14:30 the Lynx broke through. Keeping a puck in at the point, John Cronin stepped into a wrister that found its way to the net where it was stopped, but the rebound popped out in front of the Greenville net. Joe Sewell fought his way free in front, backhanding the puck into the Grrrowl net for the eventual game winner. Greg Jacina also picked up an assist on the goal. With time winding down in the third and the Grrrowl net empty, Rob Stanfield found a loose puck in the corner of the Lynx zone and fired it down the ice for an empty net goal with just 13 seconds remaining in the game. Saal and Wes Swinson picked up the assists on the goal for a 4-2 final. Saal finished the game with 25 saves and three assists to lead the Lynx to the win, while Robinson stopped 26 shots in the loss for the Grrrowl.

Augusta will now play against Gwinnett Saturday night at 7:35 pm, and it's Teddy Bear Toss Night at the game! If the Lynx score during the first period, the bears will be tossed onto the ice following the first goal, otherwise the stuffed animals will be thrown onto the ice at the conclusion of the opening frame. Tickets are available for Saturday and all remaining Lynx home games through the Civic Center Box Office, all TicketMaster locations, online at www.TicketMaster.com, or charge by phone at (706) 828-7700.
